BASILE -- The tremendous 2015 football season experienced by the Basile Bearcats will move forward, after they took care of the Homer Pelicans in a 35-7 regional playoff win here Friday night.
Basile is now 10-1 on the year and moves on the quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. The Bearcats will next host the Arcadia Hornets this Friday night.
Arcadia defeated Delhi Friday night by the score of 30-16 to advance in the playoffs.
Basile wasted no time against Homer, putting up all of their points in the first half.
The Bearcats utilized the same formula they have used all season long in their win over Homer; great defense and a powerful ground game.
The Bearcats created five turnovers in the game and rushed for over 150 yards en route to the win.
However, Basile showed that the passing game is alive and well in Bearcat land, as quarterback Tray David was exceptional in his performance. David threw for over 80 yards and a touchdown in the game.
“I think we showed that we can throw the ball if and when we need to tonight,” said Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand. “Tray did an excellent job of reading his progressions and finding the open receiver. The offensive line was great again tonight, not only in the run game, but also in their pass protection.”
Basile scored the first 21 points of the contest, all in the first quarter, to take a commanding lead coming out of the gate.
Gabe Fontenot produced the first points of the night on a 24-yard jaunt with 7:28 left in the first quarter. The extra point was good by David and Basile lead 7-0.
The Bearcats added to that lead at the 6:06 mark of the initial quarter. This time David hit tight end Ty Walker on a 42-yard crossing route for the score. The extra point was no good, givin g Basile the 13-0 lead.
Basile’s next points came from the defense. With Homer pinned back deep in their territory, an errant snap went into the end zone. The Pelican quarterback fell on the ball and a host of Bearcats covered him up for the safety, giving Basile the 15-0 lead.
Basile struck again with 1:17 left in the quarter. Fontenot plunged in from one-yard out to extend the Bearcat lead. Again, the extra point was no good, but Basile held a 21-0 lead.
Homer tried to get something going on offense in the second quarter and found it in the running of their quarterback Dontay Casey. The Pelican put together an 11 play drive, culminating in a two-yard Casey run. The extra point was good from Caleb Bailey and the lead was now cut to 21-7.
Just when Homer thought they had a little momentum, Basile return specialist Jarred Belle took the ensuing kickoff and raced 90 yards for the touchdown. Basile went for two and David connected to Blaise Hebert in the back of the end zone to give the Bearcats a 29-7 lead.
Basile was not done scoring in the second quarter. With :18 seconds remaining before half, Fontenot found the end zone once again, this time from 10-yards out. However, the extra point was wide right giving the Bearcats a 35-7 lead as the first half horn sounded.
The second half did not produce any scoring from either team. Homer did mount a small drive in the third quarter, but the Basile defense came up with a forced fumble recovery that ended the Pelican threat.
