OPELOUSAS -- There is an old adage in sports that says it is hard to beat a team three times in one season.
That adage held true here Monday afternoon, as the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans took sweet revenge on the Opelousas Catholic Lady Vikings in a 4-3 bi-district playoff win.
The two teams had met twice in the regular season, as they are part of the same district. The Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Trojans in both meetings.
However, the tenacity of a focused Sacred Heart team would not allow Opelousas Catholic another win in the ongoing rivalry between the two teams.
With the win, Sacred Heart advances to the regional round of the playoffs and will travel to Crowley on Friday to take on another district foe, Notre Dame. The Lady Pioneers defeated Oakdale Monday by the score of 15-0.
“Big win for the girls, the coaching staff and the fans,” stated an elated Sacred Heart head coach Glenn Lafleur. “I just told the girls, if you play your game, you will win. The girls played great. I told them they had to play their best game, and they did. Baylee Veillon did a great job on the mound today. They deserve this win; they have worked hard all season. My two assistant coaches Bill Ramirez and Rene Soileau deserve high praise for they work that they do. They are a major reason our season has been so successful.”
Coming out of the gate, it seemed as if the game would come down to who could score the most runs, as both teams notched multiple runs in the first inning.
Sacred began the scoring in the top of the first, plating two runs. Caroline Fontenot doubled to open up the game.
Logan Shipp grounded out to shortstop, but Fontenot was able to reach third base on the throw to first base. Sydney Fontenot singled to drive home Caroline Fontenot to give Sacred Heart a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Trojans were not done, as Gabbie Andrepont grounded out to third, allowing Sydney Fontenot to advance to second. Laura Beth Fontenot hit a shot to the first baseman that was not handled cleanly and reached first base, advancing Sydney Fontenot.
Kara Aguillard singled to drive in Fontenot for the second run. The inning ended on a pop up to the catcher off of the bat of Erin Fontenot. However, the Lady Trojans led 2-0.
Opelousas Catholic, not to be outdone, got back into the game, scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Singles by lead off batter Anna Lafleur and Emily Ortego and a double from Mallory Little tied the game at 2-2
Opelousas Catholic took a 3-2 lead in the second inning. when Danielle LeBlanc scored on a single from Kakhi Pythian.
The Lady Trojans tied things up in the top of the fourth.
With two outs, head coach Glenn Lafleur rolled the dice and called for a squeeze bunt. Shipp laid down a perfect bunt that allowed pinch runner Sydney Soileau to score and knot the game at 3-3.
The final run of the game came in the top of the fifth. Andrepont doubled to lead things off and reached third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. With two outs and Erin Fontenot at the plate, another wild pitch scored Andrepont from third and sealed the win for the Lady Trojans.
Baylee Veillon picked up the win for Sacred Heart on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out one. Andrepont and Caroline Fontenot each picked up two hits, including a doubles from both players, to lead the Lady Trojans at the plate.
