Panther split

PINE PRAIRIE--- The Pine Prairie High Panthers and Lady Panthers split contests with Elton High School here Monday night in non-district competition, as the Lady Panthers fell to the Lady Indians, while the Panthers took a five-point win over their counterparts.
Here is a rundown of both games played.
Elton (G) vs. Pine Prairie
A slow start and a poor shooting performance lead to a 46-36 loss to the Elton Lady Indians in the opening contest Monday night.
Pine Prairie could not find the bucket in the first 6:15 seconds of the opening quarter and found themselves in a 10-0 deficit to start the game.
The Lady Panthers finally put points on the board at the 1:45 mark of the opening quarter and trailed the Lady Indians 12-4 as the quarter came to a close.
Pine Prairie cut the lead to four after one minute of play in the second quarter. However, Elton went on an eight point run to lead 20-8 with 4:23 left in the half.
The last part of the first half saw Pine Prairie and Elton exchanging buckets. The Lady Indians scored the last three points of the half to take a 25-11 lead into the locker room.
After alternating baskets to start the third quarter, Pine Prairie managed a six point swing midway through the quarter to cut the lead to eight 29-21.
The Lady Indians finished the quarter outscoring the Lady Panthers 6-3 to bring the score to 35-24.
Pine Prairie had no answer to Elton, as every time the Lady Panthers put up points, the Lady Indians had an answer. Pine Prairie closed out the game on a 9-2 run, but it was too little too late.
The Lady Panthers shot under 40 percent for the night. Pine Prairie was lead by Taylor Deville who registered 14 points.
Elton (B) vs. Pine Prairie
In the night cap, the Pine Prairie Panthers had to claw their way back into the game right before halftime to take a 75-70 win over the Elton Indians.
Pine Prairie found themselves in a hole to start the contest. Elton broke out from the opening tip and took a quick 10-3 lead at the 4:22 mark of the first quarter.
Pine Prairie began to assert themselves offensively, putting Elton in early foul trouble and inched their way back into the contest, cutting the lead to 19-14 as the first quarter buzzer sounded.
In a foreshadowing of things to come, 21 fouls were called in the first quarter alone; 13 on Elton and eight on Pine Prairie.
The Panthers trimmed the lead to three on the first bucket of the second quarter and took over the lead a the 5:19 mark, 22-21.
However, Elton would not yield, regaining the lead until late in the first half. Pine Prairie would take the lead back for good at the 1:47 mark on a Douglas Fontenot basket. At the end of the half the score was 35-30 in Pine Prairie’s favor.
The third quarter belonged to the Panthers, as they opened up an eleven point lead behind the scoring of Sylus Carson. Carson netted eight points in the quarter to give the Panthers a 53-42 lead as the third quarter ended.
Pine Prairie looked as if victory would be inevitable, breaking out to a commanding 16 point lead, 60-44 with 5:19 left in the game.
However, the Indians had other plans. Elton began chipping away and found themselves down by two with only 1:27 left in the game.
The Panthers scored six straight points to open the game up again forcing the Indians to foul. Pine Prairie hit nine of ten free throws to close out the win.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Carson and Fontenot, who scored 29 and 24 points respectfully in the win.
