The Pine Prairie Panthers and Lady Panthers went on the road Thursday to take on Plainview High School in a non-district match-up. The Lady Panthers were outmatched as they fell 74-37 to the Lady Hornets. The Panthers continued their hot streak, as they upended the Hornets 56-46.
In the girl’s game, Plainview jumped out to a commanding 21-4 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Panthers tried to respond in the second quarter; however, the Lady Hornets outscored Pine Prairie 17-13 and closed out the first half with a 38-17 lead.
Plainview came out in the third quarter with the purpose of putting the game out of reach. The game plan worked, as the Lady Hornets extended their lead to 62-28. The fourth quarter saw Plainview continue to add to their lead, outpacing Pine Prairie 12-9 to close out the game. With the loss, the Lady Panthers fall to 3-9 on the year. Pine Prairie will participate in the Menard tournament starting on Monday.
Looking to extend their win streak to six games, the Panthers had to use a 24-6 third quarter advantage to pull away from Plainview. The first quarter was not kind to Pine Prairie, as the Hornets jumped ahead 16-9 early in the game.
The Panthers began to work their way back into the game in the second quarter, outscoring Plainview 13-11 to cut into the Hornet lead and only trail 27-22 as the first half closed.
The third period was all Panthers, as Vontrevis Thomas netted eight points to give Pine Prairie the 46-33 lead at the end of the quarter. Plainview outpaced the Panthers 13-10 in the fourth stanza, but it was not enough to overtake Pine Prairie before the final buzzer sounded.
The Panthers had three players post double digits on the night. Leading the way for Pine Prairie was Allen Myles, who netted 18 points. Josh Freeman added 13 points and Thomas chipped in 12 points.
The Panthers now hold an overall record of 17-4 and have won six games in a row. They will next participate in the Menard tournament, which begins on Monday.
