The Pine Prairie Panthers will be looking for their first win of the 2015 season as they host the Pearl River Rebels Friday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Pine Prairie showed much improvement on the defensive side of the ball against the Beau Chene Gators in their 26-8 loss this past Friday. The Panthers allowed 264 yards on the ground to the Gators after being sliced up for 385 yards against Bunkie a week ago.
“We went into the game trying to take away what Beau Chene did best,” said Pine Prairie head coach Yves Prince. “Our defense did a great job of stopping their fullback and bottling up the sweep. The only problem we had was tackling their quarterback. They moved their original fullback to quarterback and when he carried the ball, we had a tough time wrapping him up.”
The Panthers also showed that they are willing to open the offense up, going to a spread offense along with the split back veer game plan they have utilized the last few weeks.
“We are trying to get teams out of the box,” stated Prince. “I thought we ran the power and sweep well. We have a sophomore running back and he still has some things to learn.”
Pine Prairie will face a Rebel squad that is 2-0 on the season. This past Friday, Pearl River defeated Pine High School 20-19.
“Pearl River has some big players,” commented Prince. “They spread you out and want to pass the ball. I think we can use our speed against them. The big key is to get our offense to play four quarters. If we can do that, it will give our defense a chance to rest.”
