Parish hoops tourney schedule, state cross country results told

The 2016 Evangeline Parish basketball tournament schedule has been released and Pine Prairie High School will be the host for this year’s event.
The tournament will begin on Wednesday afternoon when the Basile Lady Bearcats square off against the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans at 3:30 p.m.
At 5 p.m the Basile Bearcats will take on Sacred Heart in game two of the tourney.
Night cap games on Wednesday include a couple of excellent match-ups.
The 6:30 p.m. game will see the Mamou Lady Demons face off against the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs, while the Mamou Demons will hit the floor to take on the Ville Platte Bulldogs at 8 p.m.
The winners of these two games will move on to Friday’s winner’s bracket game.
Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. the losers of the opening games for the girls will be in action, while the loser of Wednesday’s opening boy’s games will collide at 5 p.m.
The Pine Prairie Lady Panthers received a bye on Wednesday and will see their first action of the tournament on Thursday and will take on the winner of the Sacred Heart/Basile contest at 6:30 p.m.
The Pine Prairie boys will also get their first taste of the tournament on Thursday, as they too will face the winner of the Basile/Sacred Heart game. That game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Friday will be elimination day, as the tournament will be whittled down to two teams in the boy’s and girl’s brackets.
Game times for Friday will be the same as Wednesday and Thursday, with the first game beginning at 3:30 and the final game of the day slated for an 8 p.m. start
Championship games will take place on Saturday with the girl’s title game set for 11:00 p.m and the boy’s title game scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

State cross-country
Four of the parish schools recently sent runners to the state cross country meet held in Natchitoches on the campus of Northwestern State University.
Those teams included boys and girls from Mamou, Pine Prairie, Sacred Heart and Ville Platte.
In girls Class 3A action, the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers placed thirteenth in the overall school standings. Riley Wells led the way for the Lady Panthers finishing in a time of 24:56.98.
Other Lady Panthers that competed included Gracie McCall, Emily Vidrine, Abbigail Fontenot, Kaitlyn Robinson and Blaire Fontenot.
Also in Class 3A, the Ville Platte Lady Bulldogs had one lone runner place, as seventh grader Hannah Monier finished thirty-sixth out of 82 runners.
In class 2A girls competition, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans finished fourteenth overall as a team. Leading runner for Sacred Heart was Chelsey Monier who finished with a time of 26:27.98.
Other runners that contributed to the Lady Trojans placement include Brooke Soileau, Moira Parks, Caroline DeRouen, Alia Jordan, Kathryn Bergeron and Grace LeJeune.
The Mamou Lady Demons had one runner place, as Katiee Bertrand finished in a time of 25:54.38.
In the Class 3A boy’s event, the Pine Prairie Panthers recorded an eleventh place finish as a team. Anthony Sharpe, Jr. led the way for the Panthers with a time of 20:25.71
Team members from Pine Prairie that aided in the great finish for the Panthers included Zachary Manuel, Jason Marsh, Kyler Carson, Bailey Fontenot, Colby Dupuis and Nick Ortego.
Ville Platte High also had four participants at the meet. Trayvence Thomas, Alexander Soileau, Derrick Clark and Deshawn West all competed, with Thomas leading the Bulldogs with a time of 20:12.42.
In the boy’s Class 2A race, both the Sacred Heart Trojans and the Mamou Demons had several runners compete.
Sacred Heart’s Dawson Buller had the best time for the Trojans, finishing the three miles in 21:47.13.
Not far behind was Mamou’s Chase Guillory who finished in a time of 21:54.54.
Other Trojan runners included Nicholas Reed, Dreu Fontenot, Tristen Soileau, Hunter Arnaud, Wyatt Fontenot and Jacques Leger.
Other Demon runners included Connor Deshotel, Hayden Bergeron, Bredon Naquin, Laydon Dawson and Luke Landreneau.

The Ville Platte Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs competed in separate tournaments over the Thanksgiving holidays.
The Bulldogs traveled to Opelousas and took on three very good teams. Ville Platte came away with a 2-1 record after defeating Acadiana 54-32 and Franklin 56-47. Their only defeat was a 53-41 loss to St. Martinville.
The Lady Bulldogs suffered a 72-16 loss to Barbe and defeated Vermilion Catholic 59-20 at the St. Thomas More tournament.
The Bulldogs are now 4-2 on the year while the Lady Bulldogs move to 4-1.
