The Pine Prairie invitational basketball tournament concluded this past weekend, with several Parish teams competing successfully. Here is a rundown of those games played late Friday night and Saturday.
Sacred Heart (G)
vs. Pine Prairie
For the second time in a week, the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans and the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers faced each other on the hardwood; this time for third place in the girl’s bracket.
The game was almost a mirror image of the previous game, as the Lady Trojans surged in the second half to take a 52-41 win over the Lady Panthers.
Each team took a different path in the first half, but wound up with the same score.
Pine Prairie outpaced Sacred Heart in the first quarter 16-11, while the Lady Trojans turned the table on the Lady Panthers in the second quarter gaining a 10-5 advantage, making the score 21-21 as the first half concluded.
It was all Sacred Heart in the second half, as they produced more points in both the third and fourth quarters to outscore Pine Prairie 31-20 the rest of the way.
Gabbie Andrepont led the way for the Lady Trojans with 15 points, while Erin Fontenot chipped in 13 points. Catherine Poche added 11 points for Sacred Heart.
Tori Bordelon led all Lady Panthers with 10 points.
Mamou (B) vs.
David Thibodaux
A slow start for the Mamou Demons spelled doom, as they could not overcome a 15 point deficit in the first quarter in a 72-56 loss to David Thibodaux for third place in the boy’s bracket.
Mamou tried to get back into the game keeping pace in the second quarter with the Bulldogs, and trailed 38-22 at the half.
The Demons mounted an attempted comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 17-8.
However, the Bulldogs turned up the fire in the final quarter, pulling away by taking a 26-17 advantage for the win.
Leading the way for the Demons was Trey Wilson, who poured in 18 points. Luke Thomas knocked down 12 points and Jaquaylan Arvie added 10 points in the loss.
Pine Prairie (B)
vs. Crowley
The fans got their money’s worth in the boy’s championship game, as the Crowley Gents and the Pine Prairie Panthers took the contest to double overtime before Crowley finally overtook Pine Prairie in an 85-75 win.
It was close the whole game, as each team came out on fire offensively. The Gents outpaced the Panthers 18-16 in the first quarter and was one point better in the second quarter, 11-10 to take a 29-26 lead into the locker room.
However, the Panthers were able to tie the game in the third quarter, 46-46, by outscoring the Gents 20-17.
Both teams would not yield as each squad put up 19 points in the final quarter to make the game 65-65 at the end of regulation.
Unfortunately for the Pine Prairie, Crowley proved too strong in the two overtime periods, taking a 20-10 advantage to close out the win and the championship.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Vontrevius Thomas, who scorched the nets for 25 points.
Douglas Fontenot popped in 19 points, while Sylus Carson was good for 18 points. Anthony Payne added 11 points for Pine Prairie.
