PEARL RIVER -- It was a long ride home for the Pine Prairie Panthers, as they let an early lead slip away in a 21-6 loss to Pearl River on Friday night.
With the loss, Pine Prairie drops to 1-2 on the year. Pearl River moves to 2-1. The Panthers will travel to Mamou this Friday in a rivalry game against the Demons.
Pine Prairie began the game with an eight play 80-yard scoring drive to get on the board first, as JJ Sims blasted into the end zone from five yards out.
The big play of the drive was a 46-yard run by Sims on the very first play of the game. The Caleb Dupuis extra point try was no good, but the Panthers owned a 6-0 lead over the Rebels.
From that point on it was all Pearl River, as they posted 21 unanswered points.
The Rebels took over the lead in the latter part of the first quarter when Courtney Moore scooted in from nine yards out with only 1:28 left in the period. The try after was good off of the foot of Hunter Mortenson giving Pearl River a 7-6 lead.
The Rebels did not take very long to score their second touchdown of the game. After a blocked punt that was recovered on the Pine Prairie nine yard line, Pearl River needed just three plays to add to their lead.
This time it was a three-yard rush from Matthew Einsensohn that put the Rebels on top by two scores. The PAT was good and Pearl River owned a 14-0 lead.
It took until the fourth quarter before Moore strode in from 37 yards out, but with that touchdown, the Rebels had put the game out of reach.
