Playoffs loom for Evangeline Parish softball teams
The 2015 high school softball season ended yesterday, with all games having to be completed by 10 p.m. last night. Now the LHSAA will sort through all of the records of teams throughout the state and build the bracket for this year’s playoffs. In the parish, three teams will find out today who and where they will play in the postseason. Evangeline Parish squads Mamou, Pine Prairie and Sacred Heart will all be in the playoffs, it is just a matter of where they will be seeded. Each team must then coordinate with their opponent as to the date and time of the first round contest.
The Mamou Lady Demons will go into the extended season as district co-champs. As of press time, the Lady Demons held an overall record of 12-8 and a district record of 8-2. Mamou tied for the district championship with Kinder. The Lady Demons struggled early on in the season, but turned up their play in district competition. Besides the big district wins collected by the Lady Demons, Mamou also had huge wins against Eunice, Bolton and Jennings. The only game left on the Mamou schedule was a Wednesday contest against class 5A powerhouse Sulphur, weather permitting. The Lady Demons were ranked number 19 in the latest LHSAA power rankings.
Pine Prairie started their season at a mediocre 3-3. Since then, the Lady Panthers have been very impressive, going 14-2 over that stretch. As of press time, Pine Prairie held an overall record of 17-5 and 8-1 in district play. The Lady Panthers have outscored their district opponents 125-27 in nine games. Pine Prairie has scored impressive non-district wins over Northwood-Shreveport, Minden and Buckeye. The Lady Panthers are ranked number 19 in the latest LHSAA power rankings, but will likely move up when the playoff bracket is announced. Pine Prairie was scheduled to play Port Barre this week to decide the district championship. The Lady Panthers were one game behind the Lady Red Devils. A win by Pine Prairie would create a tie for the title. As of press time this game had been moved to yesterday because of weather conditions.
The Lady Trojans of Sacred Heart finished the year as the district 5-1A runners-up to Catholic of Pointe Coupee. Sacred Heart completed the regular season with an overall record of 13-8 and a district record of 3-3. The Lady Trojans played a very competitive non-district schedule. Impressive wins over Port Barre, Grant, Kinder and Mamou have propelled Sacred Heart to a number six ranking in the latest LHSAA power point poll. As of press time, the Lady Trojans were scheduled to play Pine Prairie on Wednesday. This game will depend on the weather and if the Lady Panthers still need to make up a district game against Port Barre.
