Sacred Heart has another Fontenot slated to hit the hill for McNeese State University next fall.
Ace right-handed pitcher Conner Fontenot signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the Cowboys starting in 2017.
The senior hurler follows in the footsteps of former Trojan Kaleb Fontenot, who graduated from McNeese this past year and was recently drafted by the Texas Rangers.
“Kaleb was a big influence on me,” said Fontenot. “I have always looked up to him and I hope I can follow in his footsteps.”
Fontenot’s junior year stats and his big arm got him noticed quickly.
Last season, Fontenot collected four wins in eight starts and sported an ERA of 3.64. He also struck out 43 and walked 26.
“About a week before the playoffs last season, the coaches came talk to me and wanted to see me play,” said Fontenot. “After that, they asked me to come up for a visit. We went down there and had a great visit.”
McNeese was not the only team who showed an interest in the righty, as Southeastern Louisiana also courted the junior.
Asked what finally sold him on the Cowboys and their program, Fontenot was very straightforward.
“McNeese had a very welcoming feel,” stated Fontenot. “The coaches are laid back and it just felt like home.”
Fontenot would like to pursue a nursing degree while at McNeese, if he can fit the curriculum in with baseball.
“I will sit down and talk with my parents and the coaches and see how it would work out with the demands of the program,” commented Fontenot.
For now, Fontenot will concentrate on his upcoming senior season.
“We just want the opportunity to get back to the state championship again this season,” stated Fontenot.
