LOREAUVILLE-- In a key battle to maintain playoff position in Division III, the Sacred Heart Trojans traveled to Loreauville in the hopes of picking up some very important power points with a win over the Tigers.
Unfortunately, Sacred Heart could not sustain their first half performance, as Loreauville ran away from the Trojans in the second half for a 22-7 win.
With the loss, Sacred Heart falls to 4-3 on the year and 1-3 in district play.
The game was very mundane for both teams in the first half, with only one score coming in the second quarter.
With 8:08 left before half time, Loreauville put up the first points of the night when Zy Alexander busted over the offensive line from one-yard out. The two-point conversion failed, but the Tigers now owned a 6-0 lead over the Trojans.
As the second half opened, both Sacred Heart and Loreauville tried to get the upper hand on each other.
The Tigers put together a couple of scoring drives to open up the lead in the third quarter.
Loreauville’s second touchdown of the evening came on a 22-yard pass reception by Bryson Broussard from Alexander. Broussard added the two-point conversion run making the score 14-0 in favor of the Tigers with 1:56 to go in the third quarter.
The Tigers added to their lead late in the same period, as the Trojans turned the ball over again on their next offensive snap, with Loreauville recovering and getting another boost from an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Five plays later, Brennon Williams carried in from three yards out and Alexander hit Je’Dan Jacob for the 2-point conversion giving Loreauville the 22-0 edge with seven seconds left in the quarter.
Sacred Heart’s only score came late in the final moments of the game with only 32 seconds left when Wesley Launey connected on a six-yard pass to JT Harper. Alec Gotro tacked on the extra point to make the score 22-7.
Sacred Heart killed themselves all night long with a plethora of mistakes, as the Trojans had 10 penalties for 95 yards and fumbled four times, losing two of those to Loreauville.
After the game Sacred Heart head coach Josh Harper reiterated the need to clean up those mistakes.
“I think the effort was good,” stated Harper. “I think we fought for four quarters. We’ve got a lot of kids playing both ways. Loreauville is a hell of a team. I can’t take anything away from them. When you’re playing a good team like that you can’t have turnovers and you can’t have stupid penalties.”
“(Loreauville) played hard,” Haprer continued, “That’s a well-coached team. But we just shot ourselves in the foot in the second half, and that’s what it led to.”
Launey finished the night 10 for 17 with 112 yards passing and one touchdown. Harper hauled in five receptions for 81 yards and one touchdown.
Sacred Heart will host West St. Mary this Friday night at Soileau/Landry field.
West St. Mary lost to Notre Dame 62-0 in their last game.
