Sacred Heart gets double OT win over Opelousas Catholic

VILLE PLATTE — The Lady Trojans continued to commit venial sins of basketball along with other mental gaffes; however, prompt succor intervened as they went on to win 4948 in double overtime on Trojan Lane.
“It was a very big win in overtime tonight,” said coach Stephanie Fontenot. “We had numerous people foul out, but our girls fought to the end. We had a bunch of young people on the floor at the end, and they stuck with it. And our seniors stepped it up and were leaders.”
Catherine Poche, Gabbie Andrepont, and Kara Aguillard helped guide Sacred Heart to an 8-8 tie in the first quarter. However, the Lady Trojans ended the quarter with twice as many points than fouls
Opelousas Catholic made a big three to take a 21-15 lead and started to take advantage of the Sacred Heart mental gaffes.
Sacred Heart scored on back-to-back possessions to come back and tie the game at 21 with seconds remaining before the half. The half ended with the home team leading 22-21.
Sacred Heart came out and took a 26-21 lead at the 4:40 mark of the third quarter.
Opelousas Catholic went on a five point run that ended with an Erin Fontenot lay up and two Aguillard free throws, giving the Lady Trojans a 32-26 lead at the end of three quarters of play.
After an Andrepont bucket to open the fourth quarter, Opelousas Catholic went on another run cutting the Trojan lead to 34-31.
Sacred Heart’s mental gaffes continued allowing Opelousas Catholic to cut the lead to two.
An Aguillard rebound and basket put Sacred Heart up 38-33 with just over two minutes remaining.
Opelousas Catholic drilled a three on the other side of the court making it a two point game, 40-38 with 21.9 seconds on the clock. Opelousas Catholic then tied it at 40 apiece, sending the game to overtime.
In the overtime period and the game tied at 45-45 with 59.4 left on the clock., Sacred Heart’s Mary Margaret Gil put back an errant bucket to put the Lady Trojans up by two. However, the Lady Vikings drilled another three to take the 48-47 lead.
With only seconds left on the clock, Sacred Heart’s Whitney Tate stole a pass and pushed it forward to Andrepont who put the game wining lay up in with only 0.4 seconds left in the game.
