Coming off of a tough 35-0 loss at the hands of the Opelousas Catholic Vikings, the Sacred Heart Trojans must now host perennial state championship contender Notre Dame High School in a district 5-2A contest Friday night at Soileau/Landry field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Pioneers, who dropped down to 2A this year, are 5-0 on the season and have only given up 36 points in their five games. Notre Dame was the state semi-finalist in Division II last year. The Pioneers are averaging 29.4 points per game in 2015.
Trojan head coach Josh Harper know his Trojans have a tall task in front of them this Friday, but is more concerned about his team’s ability to play in the big game situations, especially after last week’ performance against the Vikings.
“We have to learn how to prepare for the big games,” said Harper. “Against Opelousas Catholic, we made the rookie mistakes that we had not made the last two weeks. Mentally, we need to find away to compete in the tough games.”
“We cannot make the mistakes against good teams that were made this past week and expect to compete.”
Sacred Heart committed 10 penalties, turned the ball over three times and had 11 plays with negative yardage in the game against the Vikings. The Trojans also battled all night long to get anything going on offense, rushing for only 64 yards.
“This week, I am looking for our players to go out and compete,” said Harper. “I want to see us to be ready to play and don’t quit on themselves. We have to clean up the mistakes get back to the team that I know we can be.”
Leading the way for the Trojans is running back Julien Vidrine. The senior has rushed for 458 yards on 37 carries and has five touchdowns.
Not far behind him in the rushing department is a another senior running back. Garrick Fontenot has 326 yards on 77 carries for the Trojans.
Defensively, freshman Josh Harper leads the team with 26 tackles, while senior Jacob L. Lafleur is second with 21 tackles on the year.
