The Sacred Heart Trojan baseball team took to the diamond Thursday afternoon to take on the Opelousas Catholic Vikings in a crucial district game.
All was going well until the fourth inning, when the sky opened up and the rains fell in buckets forcing the suspension of the game. At the time of the suspension, Opelousas Catholic was on top by the score of 2-1.
As of press time, no makeup up date had been set between the teams.
Also, the Ville Platte High Bulldogs picked up a big district win over the Northwest Raiders on the road Thursday afternoon.
Here is a rundown of those games.
Sacred Heart vs.
Opelousas Catholic
Sacred Heart came into the Thursday’s contest against Opelousas Catholic on a mission. The Trojans had dropped their first three district games by one run each and were determined to make sure that scenario did not play out again.
The first inning did not bode well for Sacred Heart, as the first three batter were retired in order.
Opelousas Catholic capitalized on a couple of defensive miscues from the Trojans and managed to plate two runs in the bottom of the first, even after having their first two batters go down on strikeouts.
Sacred Heart did not panic and cut the lead in half in the top of the second inning. Jacob A. Lafleur walked to lead things off. A perfect sacrifice bunt from Keaton Tate moved Lafleur into scoring position.
After a Sam Tuminaro strike out, Conner Fontenot grounded to shortstop, who promptly booted the ball, allowing Lafleur to score and Fontenot to reach base safely. A fly ball off of the bat of Brandon Fontenot ended the threat for the Trojans.
Neither team could scored in the third inning and Sacred Heart managed to get a runner to second base in the top of the fourth, but could not get the timely hit to plate the run.
Opelousas Catholic came to bat in the bottom of the fourth, when the rains came and forced the suspension of the contest.
Ville Platte vs.
Northwest
The Ville Platte High Bulldogs baseball team came across another district win on Thursday, as they edged past the Northwest Raiders 6-5.
With the win Ville Platte moves to 4-9 on the season and 1-5 in district play. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play Pine Prairie at home on Monday and at Pine Prairie on Tuesday. Game one against the Panthers is scheduled for 4 p.m. and game two is set for 6 p.m.
Against the Raiders, Ville Platte jumped out to an early lead, as the Bulldogs plated a lone run in the top of the first when Nick Vidrine singled and scored.
The Bulldogs shut down the Raiders in the bottom of the first and proceeded to score two more runs in the top of the second.
Northwest responded with single runs in the bottom of the second and the third, but Ville Platte kept on top by adding a lone run in the third and two runs in the fourth.
