Sacred Heart rolls past St. Ed’s 17-0

In a rematch of the 2015 softball playoffs, Sacred Heart of Ville Platte spoiled St. Edmund’s season opener as the Lady Trojans cruised to a 17-2 mercy-rule win over the Lady Jays Wednesday in Eunice.
Sacred Heart (1-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, begun when Logan Shipp singled, Gabby Andrepont reached on a fielder’s choice and they both scored on a double by Sydney Fontenot.
Laura Beth Fontenot followed with a double and then Mallory Hernadez launched a home run over the centerfield wall.
The Lady Trojans pushed ahead 6-0 in the top of the second when Caroline Fontenot singled and scored on a double by Kara Aguillard.
Sacred Heart increased their lead to 7-0 in the top of the third as Laura Beth Fontenot singled and scored on a hit by Olivia Brignac.
The Lady Trojans exploded for 10 runs in the top of fourth put the game away, 17-0.
St. Edmund avoided the shutout in the bottom of the fourth when Victoria McGee singled up the middle and scored on a sacrfice by Elissa David.
The Lady Jays added a run when Kelli Richard singled and scored on a hit by Abby Miller.
Baylee Veillon earned the win as she allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Caroline Fontenot went 4-for-4 to lead the Lady Trojans, while Laura Beth Fontenot went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Sydney Fontenot, Hernadez and Brignac all finished 2-for-3, while Aguillard and Shipp both went 2-for-4.
St. Edmund travels to Iota 4 p.m. Monday, while Sacred Heart visits Beau Chene on Tuesday.
