Sacred Heart sweeps False River in district play
Both the Sacred Heart Trojans and the Lady Trojans travelled to False River Tuesday night in district play. The Trojans played a tremendous defensive game in gaining a 47-31 win. The Lady Trojans rode a 10 point half time lead to a 62-58 victory. The Trojans are now 4-11 on the season and 1-1 in district play. The Lady Trojans improved to 8-10 on the year and evened their district record to 1-1.
Girl’s Game
The Lady Trojans went into the contest against the Lady Gators looking to gain some footing in the district 5-1A race. A win for Sacred Heart would also give the Lady Trojans some very important power points needed in the drive toward the playoffs. Sacred Heart showed their resilience against False River in gaining the ever important win.
Both squads came out ready to play with the opening tip off. The Lady Trojans got a boost from center Hannah Lemoine, as she knocked down six points in the initial period. Sacred Heart used that performance to outscore False River 15-13 to take the early lead.
Sacred Heart took control of the game in the second period. The Lady Trojan offense came alive, as they were able to net 17 points in the quarter. The Lady Gators were held in check by the Sacred Heart defense and could only manage eight points in the stanza. The Lady Trojans took the 32-22 lead into halftime.
False River came out in the third quarter looking to work their way back into the game. The Lady Gators took advantage of lapses in the Lady Trojan defense to rattle the rim for 20 points. Sacred Heart was only able to produce seven points in the stanza and held a 45-42 lead at the end of the period.
Showing the tenacity they have exuded all season, the Lady Trojans closed out the game with an offensive outburst. Sacred Heart took advantage of the Lady Gator defense and added 17 points to their score, while holding False River to 14 points to close out the win.
Leading scorer for the Lady Trojans was Gabby Andrepont, who netted 17 points. Kara Aguillard chipped in 14 points for Sacred Heart in the victory.
Boy’s Game
Trying to gain some momentum as the season reaches its half way point, the Sacred Heart Trojans went into False River hoping to continue the tremendous effort shown so far. The Trojans knew that if they were to have a chance at a playoff berth, they needed a victory against False River. With the season in the balance, Sacred Heart used a suffocating defense to put away the Gators.
The first quarter was not very productive for either squad. Each team started very slow on the offensive end of the court. The Trojans and Gators combined for only 14 points with Sacred Heart taking the 8-6 lead as the first period ended.
Sacred Heart began to find their rhythm in the second period. Sean Fontenot helped to pace the Trojans, scoring nine of the Trojan 16 points in the quarter. An outstanding defensive effort held False River to only four points and gave Sacred Heart the 24-10 lead as the first half buzzer sounded.
Unbelievably, the Trojans were able to top their defensive performance in the second quarter. Sacred Heart held the Gators to an astonishing one point in the third stanza. The Trojans added another 13 points to extend their lead to 37-11 as the third quarter came to a close.
The Gators took advantage of a host of Trojan substitutions in the final stanza. False River added 20 points in the quarter to cut into the Sacred Heart lead. However, the Trojans finished the quarter with 10 points of their own to seal the win. Leading the way for Sacred Heart was Fontenot, who poured in 22 points. Mikey Laughlin added eight points for the Trojans.
