Sacred Heart Turkey Tournament play begins

The Sacred Heart Turkey Tournament got under way Monday morning and will continue thru Wednesday. Here are the results of games played on Monday and Tuesday. Final results will be posted in Sunday’s paper.

Monday’s Games

Girls’ Bracket

Opelousas Catholic vs. Oakdale
The first game of the tournament pitted the Oakdale Lady Warriors vs. the Lady Vikings of Opelousas Catholic. This game went into overtime as Opelousas Catholic came through with a 52-51 victory.
Leading scorers for the Lady Vikings were Brittany Major who poured in 24 points and Julie Larcade who added 13 points. Ramona Green scored 28 for the Lady Warriors.

Pine Prairie
vs. St. Ed’s
The Pine Prairie Lady Panthers took on the St. Ed’s Lady Blue Jays in the second girls’ contest. Pine Prairie took a 22-12 lead into half time lead en route to a 42-30 victory.
Kaitlyn Bradley scored 25 points to lead the Lady Panthers. Payton Crowell led the Lady Jays with seven points. The win advanced Pine Prairie in the tournament and allowed them to play the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans for the last girl’s game of the day.

Opelousas Catholic vs. Mamou
The first game for the Mamou Lady Demons in the tournament resulted in a 53-21 victory. The Lady Demons and the Lady Vikings were almost dead even at the end of the first quarter, as Mamou held a 9-8 early lead. The Lady Demons exploded in the second quarter outscoring Opelousas Catholic 16-5 to lead 25-13 at the half. The Mamou defense was superb in the third period, holding the Lady Vikings scoreless and tacked on 19 points to extend their lead to
Leading scorer for the Lady Demons was Arkie Thomas who netted 17 points. Dezzy Bellard added 11 points. For the Lady Vikings, Julia Larcado was top scorer with 14 points.

Pine Prairie
vs. Sacred Heart
In the final girl’s game of the day, the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers took on the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans. It was a tale of two halves, as Pine Prairie outscored Sacred Heart 36-23 in the second half but could not overcome the 36-12 first half deficit in a 47-41 Lady Trojan victory.
Sacred Heart played great defense in both the first and second quarters, holding Pine Prairie to five and seven points respectively. The Lady Panthers used a full court press to work their way back in the second half, but could not complete the comeback.
Natalie Earles led Sacred Heart with 19 points. Kara Aguillard added nine points for the Lady Trojans. Leading scorer for the Lady Panthers was Taylor Deville who collected 14 points. Kaitlyn Bradley tacked on another 11 points for Pine Prairie.

Boys’ Bracket

Pine Prairie
vs. Nortre Dame
The first boy’s game of the tournament saw the Pine Prairie Panthers take on the Notre Dame Pioneers. The Panthers rolled out to a 19-3 first quarter lead and never looked back in a 54-44 win. Pine Prairie added 12 more points in the second quarter and led 31-16 at halftime.
The Pioneers outscored the Panthers 28-23 in the second half but it was not enough to overcome the halftime deficit. The win moved Pine Prairie up in the bracket, setting up an afternoon contest against Crowley High School.
Leading scorer for the Panthers was Josh Freeman who put up 19 points. Vontrevis Thomas added 13 points for Pine Prairie. Hunter Meche chipped in 14 points for Notre Dame to lead all scorers.

Iota vs. Oakdale
The second game in the boy’s bracket saw the second overtime game in the tournament. The Iota Bulldogs held off the Oakdale Warriors for a 65-61 win. Leading scorers for the Bulldogs were Triston Fontenot who poured in 24 points and Kade Hebert who tacked on 16 points. Oakdale was led by Quindale Thomas who scored 16 for the Warriors. Gabe Weldon added 14 points for Oakdale.

Pine Prairie
vs. Crowley
The Pine Prairie Panthers played their second game of the tournament against the Crowley Gents. The Panthers held a 27-23 halftime lead but could not hold off the Gents in the second half, losing by the final score of 58-52.
Pine Prairie led at the end of the first quarter 18-12. However, the second half belonged to Crowley as they outscored the Panthers 31-25.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Josh Freeman who chipped in 15 points. Vontrevis Thomas tacked on 10 points for Pine Prairie. The top scorer for the Gents was Jacqo Price who netted 20 points.

St. Edmund
vs. Sacred Heart
The nightcap game pitted the Sacred Heart Trojans and the St. Edmund Blue Jays. Sacred Heart rode a 17-8 first quarter lead to a 61-47 victory. The Trojans pumped in 22 second quarter points and held the Blue Jays to just eight in the second stanza and led 39-20 at halftime.
A 16-7 advantage in the third quarter pushed the Sacred Heart lead to 55-27 by the end of the third quarter. The Trojans played mostly freshmen and junior varsity players in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.
Mikey Laughlin led the way for Sacred Heart with 16 points. Seth Shipp added 12 points for the Trojans. Leading scorer for the Blue Jays was John Guillory who scored 18 points.

Tuesday’s Games

Boys’ Bracket

St. Edmund
vs. Oakdale
The opening game of day two started with a boys’ contest as the St. Edmund Blue Jays took it on the chin to the Oakdale Warriors losing 84-34. The Warriors scored 21 points in the first quarter that propelled them to a 51-20 halftime lead. St. Ed’s was outscored 33-14 the rest of the way in the loss.
Leading scorer for the Warriors was Quindale Thomas who netted 22 points. Leading the way for the Blue Jays was John Guillory who scored 22 points in the loss. St. Edmund was eliminated from competition with the loss.

Sacred Heart vs. Iota
In a winner’s bracket game, the Sacred Heart Trojans took on the Iota Bulldogs. Iota went ahead over Sacred Heart 14-11 in the first quarter and never relinquished that lead in taking a hard fought 45-41 win.
The Trojans trailed 27-19 at the half, but cut the lead down to 34-31 at the end of three periods. The 10 points put up by Sacred Heart was not enough to overcome the deficit and steal a victory. The loss by the Trojans threw them into the losers’ bracket.
Leading scorer for the Trojans was Sean Fontenot, who popped the net for 14 points. Christopher Tate added 10 points for Sacred Heart. Iota was led by Tristan Fontenot who scored 15 points. Dylan Hebert tacked on 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Pine Prairie
vs. Oakdale
The Pine Prairie Panthers took on the Oakdale Warriors in an elimination game with the Panthers hitting on all cylinders in a 73-38 victory. The Panthers came out on fire, both offensively and defensively outscoring the Warriors 21-2 in the first quarter. Pine Prairie added to the lead in the second quarter and jumped out 45-15 at halftime.
The Panthers stayed on pace in the third period and led 58-30 at the end of the quarter. The win propelled Pine Prairie into Wednesday’s play to take on Notre Dame at 9:30 a.m.
Leading scorer for the Panthers was Vontrevis Thomas who netted 21 points. Douglas Fontenot added 15 for Pine Prairie.

Sacred Heart
vs. Notre Dame
The Sacred Heart Trojans and the Notre Dame Pioneers squared off in a boys’ bracket elimination game. The game came down to the wire as the Pioneers pulled away in the final 50 seconds to take the 61-59 victory and advance to Wednesday’s competition. Notre Dame took an early 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Trojans outscored the Pioneers 15-10 in the second period to go ahead 28-27 at halftime.
Notre Dame took control of the game in the third quarter as they led 50-45 at the end of the third stanza. The Trojans managed to score 14 points in the final quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Pioneer lead.
Sean Fontenot led all Trojan scorers with 23 points. Christopher Tate added 18 for Sacred Heart. Leading scorer for Notre Dame was John Duos who netted 15 points in the win. The Pioneers will now face Pine Prairie in a losers’ bracket game at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Iota vs. Crowley
The final boys’ contest on Tuesday saw two undefeated Acadia Parish teams battle in the nightcap. Iota led Crowley 10-8 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams held ground scoring 13 points each to make the score 23-21 at halftime.
Crowley pulled away in the second half outscoring Iota 37-24, securing the 58-47 win. Iota moves to the losers’ bracket. Crowley has garnered a spot in the finals on Wednesday.

Girls’ Bracket

St. Edmund vs. Opelousas Catholic
The first girls’ game on Tuesday was an elimination game that pitted the St. Edmund Lady Blue Jays against the Opelousas Catholic Lady Vikings. The game was very close as both teams were knotted at 30 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Vikings surged past the Lady Jays in the final period to take the 53-51 victory.
For Opelousas Catholic, Brittany Major led all scorers with 24 points. St. Ed’s was led by Sydney Thibodeaux was poured in 20 in the losing effort.
With the loss the Lady Jays were eliminated from the tournament.

Oakdale
vs. Pine Prairie
The Lady Warriors and the Lady Panthers tangled in the second bracket game on Tuesday. Oakdale cruised out to a 17-8 first quarter led en route to a 53-32 victory. The Lady Warriors lead 31-19 at half and maintained the 12 point lead at the end of the third period.
The Lady Panthers only managed to score four points in the final stanza and allowed Oakdale to net nine points. For Pine Prairie, Taylor Deville led the way with seven points. With the loss Pine Prairie was eliminated from play.

Oakdale vs.
Opelousas Catholic
The third girls’ game on Tuesday was an elimination game between the Oakdale Lady Warriors and the Opelousas Catholic Lady Vikings. This was a rematch from the first game of the tournament in which the Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Warriors. Oakdale exacted revenge as they overpowered Opelousas Catholic 46-27.
Brittany Major led the way for the Lady Vikings with 14 points in the contest.

Mamou
vs. Sacred Heart
The final girls’ game on Tuesday was a winners’ bracket game between the Mamou Lady Demons and the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans. Mamou took a 9-4 lead at the end of one quarter of play. The Lady Demons outscored the Lady Trojans 17-9 in the second period and went into the locker room at halftime leading 26-13.
The third quarter belonged to Mamou, as they built a 44-24 to close out the period. The Lady Trojans outscored the Lady Demons 12-10 in the final quarter, but could not close the gap. Leading the way for Sacred Heart was Catherine Poche, who netted 10 points in the loss.
The loss put Sacred Heart in the losers’ bracket on Wednesday, where they will face the Oakdale Lady Warriors at 11 a.m. Mamou awaits the winner of that contest in the finals which are slated for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
