Several area softball players selected to all-district squads

With the end of the 2016 high school softball season comes the spoils of individual awards. This year is no exception, as several parish softball players were rewarded for their play on the field by being named to their respective all-district teams.
For the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers, the wave of a 19-0 record to start the season was ridden all the way to the state tournament and a quarterfinal appearance. The Lady Panthers also took home a share of the District 5-3A title and ended the year with an overall record of 26-6.
Because of their success as a team, Pine Prairie had several players named to the all-district team.
Leading the way was junior catcher Sara Tate. Tate was voted as the District MVP after a stellar season at and behind the plate. Tate hit .394 on the year, which included eight home runs, nine doubles and 39 runs scored.
Joining Tate on the first team is sophomore pitcher Karli Ortego. Ortego was 22-1 on the year and sported a 1.61 ERA. She struck out 171 batters and only issued 20 walks on the season.
Two infielders for the Lady Panthers were also named to the first team; senior first baseman Shaina Boutte and junior second baseman Tori Bordelon. Boutte hit .363 on the year with five home runs and 31 RBI. Bordelon maintained a .354 average this season and drove in 14 runs.
The Lady Panthers were also allotted two outfielders on the first team. Junior Macey Harvey and junior Julia Chaddrick.
Harvey batted .404 on the season, with 34 runs scored and 33 RBI. Chaddrick collected 31 hits on the season which led to a .320 average. She also had 14 RBI and stole 28 bases.
Rounding out the first team selections for Pine Prairie were Tori Johnson and Jacie McFarlain. Both players were named as utility players. Johnson, a sophomore, batted .370 on the season with 22 RBI and 34 runs scored. McFarlain, a freshman, led all Lady Panthers with a .443 average and eight home runs. One Lady Panther was named to the second team. Sophomore Allie Fontenot was tabbed as the third baseman. Fontenot batted .234 on the season.
The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans showed enough pride and determination throughout the season to battle their way to an overall record of 13-13 and a spot in the regional round of the playoffs. Because of their gritty season, Sacred Heart was fortunate enough to have several players selected to the first and second teams in District 5-2A.
Second baseman Logan Shipp was a first team selection. The senior batted .393 on the season, with two home runs. Joining Shipp on the first team was senior third baseman Kara Aguillard. Aguillard hit .368 on the year with one home run. The final first team selection for the Lady Trojans, was junior outfielder Caroline Fontenot. Fontenot batted .368 on the year and had one home run.
Second team selections for Sacred Heart included recent LSU-A signee Gabbie Andrepont. The senior catcher batted .360 on the season with two home runs. Along with Andrepont, senior pitcher Baylee Veillon was also a second team selection.
Other second team selections for the Lady Trojans were senior outfielder Laura Beth Fontenot (.266), junior first baseman Madison Hernandez (.338), junior outfielder Erin Fontenot (.363) and junior utility player Sydney Fontenot (.386). Sacred Heart had one honorable mention selection, senior outfielder Sarah Soileau.
The Mamou Lady Demons played with heart and desire all season long, despite having a very young ball club.
Mamou finished the season at 6-16, but was all even at 5-5 in a very tough district. Because of their willingness to battle in district, the Lady Demons had a handful of players named to the 4-2A all-district team.
Named to the first team was a pair of senior Lady Demons. Pitcher Maggie Soileau received first team honors with a 3-3 record, a 3.68 ERA and 24 strikeouts in district play. She also batted .429 in district. Joining Soileau, was utility player Kourtnie Deshotel. Deshotel batted .314 in district and collected 10 RBI.
Second team selections for Mamou included eighth grade pitcher Dacia Richard (2-2), eighth grade shortstop Maddie Fontenot (.406), eighth grade outfielder Angel Menier (.289), senior utility player Madison Fritz (.393) and senior utility player Lauren Soileau (.288).
Honorable mention selections included Emily Soileau, Sydney Bruney and Kaitee Bertrand.
Ville Platte High may not have had a tremendous season in terms of wins, but what the Lady Bulldogs did accomplish was getting into the win column itself. Ville Platte tallied two wins this year, the first wins for the Lady Bulldogs in several years.
Because of their tenacity on the field, Ville Platte was rewarded with a second team all-district selection when sophomore shortstop Logan Frank was named to that position in District 5-3A.
