Super 10’s climb back to take crown
In game one of the Super Regionals, Ville Platte met a very talented Gonzales team. The VP boys took a 13-4 win, but took some early sweating to get it done.
Issac Leger walked to get things going in the top of the first inning and Hayden Fontenot singled right behind him. Landry Lafleur singled one out later and that pushed one run home. Fontenot later scored on an error to give VP a lead.
Gabe Courville walked and scored in the top of the second inning. A triple from Ashton LeBlanc pushed the third run home.
Gonzales cracked the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second frame, giving VP an early scare. That would not last long though. In the top of the third inning, five runs came home for VP. Five singles and an error forced by Owen Smith, helped to put VP up in front big time.
Lafleur and Fontenot each finished the game with a 3-4 day at the plate.
The local boys blitzed Jena 19-4 in their second game. VP came out with three runs in the first inning and never looked back from that point on.
In the second inning, a series of walks set the stage for Issac Leger. The youngster came to the plate with the bases loaded and no where to go. Leger took the first pitch he saw and blasted it out of the ball park for a grand slam home run. In all, VP scored a total 12 runs in their first two trips to the plate in this game.
Ville Platte iced the game with five runs in the fourth inning, setting up the mercy ruling. Hayden Fontenot doubled home three runs in the inning. Fontenot and Dylan Blevins were each 1-1 with three walks at the plate.
In the third game, Ville Platte suffered their only defeat of the season at that point. They lost 12-2 to West Monroe North, sending them to the loser’s bracket.
In the loss, West Monroe (WMN) used a big seven run third inning to take the momentum and put the game away. The score was just 3-2 at the point, but a series of walks and errors, allowed WMN to go up heavily.
Alex Christofi and Sam Fontenot scored the only runs of the conest for Ville Platte.
In the loser’s bracket, VP met Jena for the second time in the tournament. The local boys would have to win in order to make it to championship Wednesday. The VP boys did just that. They crushed Jena for the second time in the tournament 14-4.
VP scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning after Jena scored two in the top of the inning. A double from Lafleur pushed one runs home and the inning continued as the Jena pitching staff struggled to find the plate.
In the second inning, VP added a few more runs on a triple from LeBlanc and Blevins hit a ball past the left fielder. The big inning came in the third frame when VP plated five more runs. A double from Leger and a single from Hayden Fontenot helped the VP offense roll along.
Leger ended the day with a 3-3 perforamce at the plate.
VP met WMN on championship Wednesday. There was a three-way tie for first place, which included St. Mary’s. Ville Platte would have to beat WMN and then defeat St. Mary’s in order to advance to the Best of Three State Tournament in Alexandria.
VP destroyed WMN 13-5 in the first game on Wednesday. The VP offense collected 13 hits including a three run homer from Ethan Fontenot. Ville Platte exploded for seven runs after going up 3-0 in the first inning.
In the second contest, St. Mary’s never stood a chance. VP went up 5-0 in the top of the first inning. Doubles from Hayden Fontenot and Aiden Brigcan got the ball rolling. Then, in the third inning, the VP offense went nova. Ethan Fontenot hit another three-run homer, while Issac Leger and Dylan Blevins also went yard.
Ville Platte got on board the championship train with a 13-1 win. The Super 10’s and the Majors will both play in Alexandria Friday at 6 p.m. to begin the best of three series. The Super 10’s opponent was not determined at press time.
