Super 10s finish as state runners-up
Ville Platte and Shreveport worked hard to put themselves in a position to win the 2014 Louisiana State Championship at the AAA (Super 10's) level. In the best of three series, Ville Platte took the first game, while Shreveport found a way to win the second contest. The situation forced the third and final game, which took place late Saturday at 5 p.m.
Shreveport struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. This put pressure on the VP offense and defense and would force the VP ball club to see if they could dig deep and make the comeback.
In the bottom of the second inning, Ville Platte scored a pair of runs to make it a 3-2 contest. Amarion Watson, the game's starting pitcher for VP, singled to get things going. One out later, Owen Smith singled as well. A single from Aiden Lejeune scored one run and Sam Fontenot singled home another run.
Shreveport answered back with four runs in the fourth inning. They took advantage of a trio of walks, back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly, moving Shreveport to a 7-2 advantage. They would add three more runs before the sixth inning and take a 10-2 lead.
Ville Platte added three more runs in the fourth inning and then one more in the fifth frame. A double from Ethan Fontenot scored two runs in the fourth inning. Fontenot later crossed the dish on a single from Smith. In the fifth block, Hayden Fontenot singled and scored on an error. Ville Platte would ultimately fall 10-6 to a very tough and resilient Shreveport team.
Ville Platte had to settle for the State Runner-Up position in the 2014 State Tournament. Despite the loss, the Ville Platte team and its coaching staff have a lot to be proud of. Shreveport advances and will represent Louisiana at the Dixie Youth World Series in Lexington, South Carolina.
