Tigers hand Demons their fourth loss of the year

The Mamou Green Demons travelled Thursday night to take on the Montgomery Tigers in the final non-district game for the Demons. Mamou matched Montgomery in just about every statistical category except for the most important one; the scoreboard. The Tigers scored in every quarter in a 33-12 defeat of the Demons.
The game was close when it came to offensive output. The Demons collected a total of 295 yards of offense, while the Tigers earned 311 total yards. Most of the yardage collected by Mamou came through the air. The Demon passing game was able to garner 182 yards, while the running game added another 113 yards. The Tigers ran the ball 32 times for 131 yards and threw for another 184 yards. So as far as offense was concerned, Mamou was right in the ball game with Montgomery.
Unfortunately, the Demons led in two categories that will almost always cost a team the game. Mamou had a total of three turnovers; two interceptions and one fumble. Also, the Demons had 11 penalties called on them for 95 yards. Montgomery had zero turnovers and only four penalties for 45 yards.
The Demons were able to put up the first points of the game, as quarterback Dylan Duplechin punched the ball in from six yards out. The kick was no good and Mamou led early, 6-0. Montgomery answered back in the first quarter, scoring on a 40-yard touchdown run. The Tigers were successful on the two point conversion pass and Montgomery led the Demons 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw only one score. Montgomery was able to hit pay dirt on a 68-yard touchdown pass. The conversion was no good and the Tigers led 14-6. The Demons could not muster any points in the second quarter and trailed at the half.
The third quarter became somewhat of an offensive explosion as both teams combined to score 18 points. The Tigers came out after halftime and tacked on 12 points before Mamou could answer. The first score for Montgomery came on 48-yard pass. The extra point was no good and the Tigers extended their lead to 20-6. Montgomery then ran the football in from three yards out to add to their lead. The extra point was again no good. However, the Tigers now led 26-7 over the Demons. Mamou pulled one score closer when Dylan Duplechin hit Robbie Deshotel for a seven-yard touchdown pass. The point after try was no good, but the Demons now only trailed 26-12.
Montgomery was able to put the icing on the cake in the fourth quarter. The Tigers extended the lead for good on a 20-yard touchdown pass. This time, the extra point was perfect and Montgomery now led Mamou 33-12. The Demons had no more answers and the game ended with that same score.
On the night, Nathaniel Holland led the Demons on the ground, carrying the ball five times for 50 yards. Duplechin had a very productive night. The Mamou quarterback completed 13 passes on 21 attempts for 167 yards and one touchdown. Duplechin also added a touchdown on the ground. Leading receiver for the Demons was Holland. Holland had six catches for 113 yards. His longest reception on the night went for 66 yards.
With the loss, Mamou goes to 1-4 on the year. The Demons will play their first district game of the year this Friday at home against the DeQuincy Tigers. DeQuincy is 2-3 on the year. The Tigers lost to Oakdale on Friday by a score of 28-20.
Mamou looks to get back on the winning side of things and turn around its season as it enters District 4-2A competition.
