PINE PRAIRIE – It was total dominance from both the Mamou girls and the Pine Prairie boys as they clashed against inter-parish rivals respectfully in non-district competition here Tuesday night.
Here is a re-cap of both games
Mamou (G) vs. Pine Prairie
A slow start for the Mamou Lady Demons turned into a fast finish as they took control of the game in the second quarter on their way to a 63-37 win over the Pine Prairie Lady Panthers.
“I think our defense dictated the game,” said Mamou head coach Mark Temple after the game. “Our ability to cause turnovers with our 2-3 trapping zone really determined the outcome. We also improved a lot at the free throw line tonight.”
It did not look like the Lady Demons were on their game in the first quarter. Mamou started sluggish on offense and only held a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
After exchanging buckets to start the second quarter, Mamou went on a 17-0 run, thanks in large part to their suffocating defense.
The Lady Panthers tried to answer back with a 9-0 run to end the half and trailed 31-17 going into the locker room.
It was much the same for Mamou in the second half. The Lady Demons put up more huge numbers in the third quarter, breaking the game open to lead 49-25 as the horn sounded to end the quarter.
The Lady Demons cruised through the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Panthers 14-10 to close out the win.
Darelzeray Bellard popped the nets for 18 points to lead all Lady Demons. Leading the way for the Lady Panthers was Sarah Vidrine who knocked down 10 points.
Mamou (B) vs. Pine Prairie
In the night cap game, the Pine Prairie Panthers kept the Mamou Demons at bay until their offense could get on track in a 67-45 Panther win.
“We really had a tough time shooting the ball tonight, especially from beyond the arc,” stated Pine Prairie head coach Chris Guillory. “But, luckily our defense held tight until we could hit some buckets. Our quickness was a factor tonight, especially on the defensive side.”
Mamou, who was without the services of center Russell Edwards, because of a sickness, held tight in the first quarter. The Demons only trailed 18-12, after being down 18-8 at one point.
Mamou hit the first two buckets of the second period to cut the lead to two, however, Pine Prairie answered with four straight points to regain the six point advantage.
The rest of the half was a back and forth game, as the Panthers and Demons exchanged baskets. Pine Prairie finished the half with a 10 points lead, 29-19.
As the third quarter began, the Demons came out with a renewed sense of urgency. Mamou out played the Panthers in the first two minutes to cut the deficit to five points.
The Panthers responded by going on a 7-0 run in the next 2:30 and lead 44-29 as the third quarter closed.
With the both benches on the floor for the majority of the fourth quarter, Pine Prairie outscored Mamou 23-16 to ice the game.
Douglas Fontenot lead all Panther scorers with 19 points, while Mack Thomas poured in 14 for Mamou.
