Trojans entertain Blue Jays in key district game
The Sacred Heart Trojans have put up 96 points in the last two games, raising their record to 5-4 on the season and 2-1 in district. They will need all of that and more as they host their long time rival the St. Edmund Blue Jays.
This game carries two very important implications for the Trojans. First, and probably most important, a Sacred Heart victory would almost definitely guarantee a berth in the LSHAA Division IV playoffs. Secondly, a Trojan win would give them a share of the district 5-1A title. Game time at Soileau-Landry field is set for 7 p.m.
This past Friday, against a newly established Beekman Charter, the Sacred Heart offense performed the way it has the last four games; very efficiently. The Trojans accumulated 316 total yards against the Tigers. The ground game was consistent as usual. The Trojans rushed the ball 25 times for 253 yards, an average of 10 yards per carry.
Leading the way on the ground was Dylan Scully, who carried the ball only five times for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Mikey Laughlin added another 104 yards on five carries and two touchdowns.
The Trojan passing game continues to improve as Joshua LaHaye and Phillip Vidrine combined for 65 yards on three completions. Leading receiver was Laughlin, who had one reception for 32 yards and one touchdown.
The Sacred Heart defense held Beekman Charter in check for most of the evening; the exception being toward the end of the game, when the Trojans utilized some younger players with the game in hand. Beekman managed only 235 yards of offense, with all of those yards on the ground. Sacred Heart did not allow a single yard through the air. The Trojan defense also collected three turnovers, two fumbles and one interception.
Sacred Heart’s next opponent, the St. Edmund Blue Jays, come into the regular season ending contest sporting a 5-3 overall record. The Blue Jays are a perfect 3-0 in district play. St. Ed’s is averaging 36 points per game and has scored over 50 points the last two games. The Blue Jay defense only allows 18 points per game and has held three of their eight opponents scoreless.
For the Trojans, a win would most likely secure that top 16 finish in the power rankings and give them the playoff spot that they have worked so hard for this season. Sacred Heart has really played consistently the last part of the season.
Two keys to the game Friday probably will not come from the Trojan offensive stars. With teams keying on Scully and Laughlin, look for fullback Garrick Fontenot to continue to be the work horse for Sacred Heart and could play a major role in the contest.
Also, the Trojan defense, the last game and a half, has really come alive. It will be a must for that unit to control the explosive Blue Jay offense to give Sacred Heart a chance to come away with the victory.
