Trojans extend win streak with wins at Rayne Tourney
The Sacred Heart baseball team went into the Rayne High School Tournament riding an eight game win streak. The Trojans continued their winning ways by gaining two more wins this past weekend. Sacred Heart defeated Hanson 8-0 in the first game and then took care of Rayne 15-10. With the two victories, the Trojans are now 14-2 on the year. Here is a rundown of the games played by Sacred Heart.
Against Hanson, the Trojans showed why they have been a dominant team this year, putting pressure on the Tigers from the start by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Sacred Heart continued to open the lead up by plating a run in the second inning when Evan Mire came across on a passed ball. The Trojans really took control in the sixth inning, scoring another two runs. In the seventh, Sacred Heart added icing to the cake, sending another run across the plate.
Phillip Vidrine garnered the win, throwing seven complete innings of shutout ball. Vidrine faced 23 batters, surrendering two hits while striking out six and allowing no free passes. Leading the way in the batter’s box for the Trojans was Jacob L. Lafleur who went two for three with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored. Keaton Tate was also two for three with two runs scored.
In what turned out to be an offensive showdown, Sacred Heart had to fend off the Rayne Wolves in the last two innings to preserve the win. The Trojans started on fire, scoring seven runs in the first two innings, including six runs in the second, to take the early 7-0 lead. Sacred Heart added another run in the third, only to have the Wolves plate two runs in the bottom of that inning.
The Trojans picked up two more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 10-2. A five to four advantage in the sixth inning put Sacred Heart up 15-6 going into the last inning. The Wolves made a hard push in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four more runs before Trojan pitching finally shut down the Rayne comeback attempt.
Keaton Tate led the way for Sacred Heart at the plate, going three for six with a triple, two runs batted in and three runs scored. Caleb Soileau, Josh LaHaye and Jacob A. Lafleur took to the hill to combine for the win.
