Trojans hit the road to face Beekman Charter
The Sacred Heart Trojans will take their 4-4 record on the road to Bastrop as they take on Beekman Charter. This game is a fill-in game for Pointe Coupee Central, which was recently shut down because it was a failing school. The Trojans are looking to put behind them a gut wrenching 55-51 loss to Catholic of Pointe Coupee this past Friday. Sacred Heart came back from a 28-point deficit in the third quarter to take the lead, only to lose that lead with 17.9 seconds on the clock. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
“It is sad that someone had to lose a game like this,” stated Sacred Heart Head Coach Gary Adkins. “This was the biggest comeback in my 33 years of coaching. I am really proud of our players for not quitting. They could have packed it in when we were down by 21 at the half, but they showed their resolve and gave a great effort in the second half.”
The Trojan offense was steady the whole game against the Hornets on Friday. Sacred Heart was able to amass 569 yards of offense; 353 yards of that total came from the rushing attack. The Trojans used the running combination of Dylan Scully and Mikey Laughlin to gain most of its yardage. Scully ran for 224 yards on 23 carries and Laughlin added 104 yards on only five attempts. Quarterback Josh Lahaye threw for 216 yards on eight completions; most of those yards and completions were to Laughlin, as he had 169 yards on six receptions. Sam Tuminaro also had two receptions for 47 yards.
“Mikey and Dylan obviously had great nights on offense,” said Adkins. “But, I was really proud of Josh. He managed the offense really well. He ran the option about as well as you can and he threw some beautiful passes. The slant routes he threw to Sam were perfect. The offensive line really dominated Friday. It was a good night offensively for us.”
Defensively for the Trojans, it was a tale of two halves. The first half of the game, Sacred Heart gave up most of the 515 yards of offense that Catholic collected. The Trojans also allowed 42 points before halftime. However, the Sacred Heart defense became a blue wall in the second half and mostly shut down the Hornet offense. Catholic was only able to score 13 points in the second stanza.
“I thought our defensive effort in the second half was really the key to our comeback,” stated Adkins. “They really came out in the second half and controlled the game. They gave the offense the ball back again and again in the second half and gave us a chance to get back into the game.”
The Trojan’s next opponent, Beekman Charter, is a newcomer to football in the LHSAA. In fact, the Tigers have only played two games the entire season and do not compete for district honors this year. The Tigers are 0-2, having lost to Tensas and Homer. The school is located in the Village of Beekman, which is just north of Bastrop. The school was established in 1914.
“I won’t really know anything about Beekman until tomorrow,” said Adkins. “We will get film on Monday from them. I told the kids that we will use this week as practice to heal a little and to work on timing. We will probably practice in helmets and T-shirts. It will give us a chance to work on special teams and conditioning. We still have a chance to get a piece of the district championship and we need to be ready for the next two games.”
