Trojans improve district record with win Friday
A win over the St. Edmund Blue Jays on Friday would keep the Sacred Heart Trojans in the hunt for a long awaited district title. The Trojans came into the contest with a 2-1 district record, one game behind league-leading North Central. Sacred Heart did what they needed to keep pace with the Hurricanes, as they defeated St. Edmund 69-49.
The Trojans needed a fast start to keep the Blue Jays from gaining any early momentum. Sacred Heart did just that, as they jumped out to a 21-10 lead in the first quarter.
St. Edmund battled their way back into the game in the second period. The Blue Jays outpaced the Trojans 10-5 in the stanza, cutting the Sacred Heart lead to only six points, 26-20, as the first half buzzer sounded.
Heading into the third quarter, the Trojans needed to match their first period performance in order to strike down any Blue Jay progress. Sacred Heart came out of the locker room looking like a team on a mission, as they outpaced St. Edmund 18-6, extending their lead to 44-36.
The final quarter solidified the game for the Trojans. Sacred Heart pushed their lead even further, as they produced a 25-13 scoring advantage in the stanza.
Sean Fontenot found his stroke, scorching the nets for a game high 23 points. Christopher Tate knocked down 17 points in the Trojan win.
Sacred Heart will host North Central on Tuesday in a very important district contest. A win for the Trojans will put them in a tie for first place with the Hurricanes.
