Trojans need consistency against Gueydan

When the season started, Sacred Heart Head Coach Gary Adkins knew that in order for the Trojans to be successful, they would have to play whole football games. Going into week three, Sacred Heart has yet to play a complete game. Going to Gueydan Friday night, Coach Adkins will use this week’s practices as a way to get them to understand how important it is to finish off games. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
“Against Basile, we played at a high level for three quarters, but did not play consistent enough for four quarters,” stated Adkins. “Friday against Opelousas Catholic, we played well in spots. We need to learn how to compete for the entire game. Don’t get me wrong, Opelousas Catholic was a good football team, but we can’t think about our opponent. We have to take care of ourselves first. The coaching staff will meet with the seniors on Monday and talk to them about how we approach practices and games. I believe that football is like life, you have to approach it the same way. You must take care of your business and everything else will fall into place. Because I am the head coach, I have to set the stage myself.”
Offensively, Sacred Heart struggled to get anything going in the Opelousas Catholic game. The Trojans managed only 114 yards of total offense, 84 of those yards were on the ground. Leading the way for Sacred Heart on the ground was Dylan Scully, who ran for 50 yards. Joshua Lahaye netted 28 yards passing. All told, the Trojans completed four passes on 12 attempts and recorded one interception. Sacred Heart also lost two fumbles. Seth Shipp led all receivers with 15 yards.
Adkins commented on the Trojan offensive performance. “Our blocking was not very good,” said Adkins. “To be a consistent team, you have to take care of the fundamentals and we did not do that Friday. When you play good teams, any problems you may have fundamentally will show up and that is what happened against Opelousas Catholic.”
Defensively, the Trojans had some problems stopping the Viking running game. Opelousas Catholic ran for 226 yards and collected 319 total yards in the game. “As a defense, we just did not tackle well,” stated Adkins. “Once again, it all comes down to fundamentals. These are things that we will continue to work on at practice. One positive thing is that our coaching staff is ready for the challenge. Our coaches work really hard and are dedicated to making sure we get better. “
Sacred Heart’s next opponent, the Gueydan Bears, is a decent football team according to Adkins. “We cannot take Gueydan lightly,” said Adkins. “They do a lot of stuff pretty well. We need to focus on winning every play in order for us to come out on top. We will need to be competitive the entire game and not just parts of the game. Winning a game by playing hard the entire game would help us tremendously for the rest of the season.”
The Trojans have a talented group of players. Going 0-2 to start the season has to be disappointing to the squad. However, the season is far from over and the players know that. It will be up to the seniors to show leadership in righting the ship. One thing is for sure, if any group of seniors can make it happen, this battle harden group will sure give it the “do or die” spirit.
