Trojans pick up tough non-district win in Bunkie

On Wednesday, the Sacred Heart Trojans traveled to Bunkie to face off against the Panthers in a non-district contest. The 2A Panthers gave the Trojans a scare in the last part of the contest; however, Sacred Heart pushed two runs across the plate late in the ball game to pick up the win.
The Trojans are now 19-2 on the season and have won 15 games in a row.
A scoreless first inning started the contest. Sacred Heart picked up two runs in the top of the second to take the early lead. Jacob L. Lafleur walked and stole second base. Garrick Fontenot was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Caleb Soileau singled, scoring Lafleur and moving Fontenot to second base. A passed ball allowed Fontenot to third. Soileau stole second base. Josh LaHaye walked to give the Trojans bases loaded.
Phillip Vidrine was hit by a pitch, which scored Fontenot. Ben Bergeron flied out to the left fielder, who promptly threw Soileau out at the plate on the tag up. Evan Mire recorded the third out when he popped up to the shortstop.
After holding the Panthers to zero runs in the bottom of the second, Sacred Heart added another run in the top of the third. Keaton Tate led off the inning by flying out to left field. Brandon Hudspeth drew a one out walk. Jacob L. Lafleur recorded the second out hitting a fly ball to center field.
Garrick Fontenot drove the second pitch he saw into the left-center field gap for a double, plating Hudspeth. Soileau ended the inning when the center fielder caught a deep fly ball.
Neither squad managed a run in the fourth inning. The Trojans collected another run in the top of the fifth inning. Evan Mire scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Hudspeth. Sacred Heart now held a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.
Bunkie came to bat needing runs to stay in the game. The Panther bats came alive, recording four straight hits, including two doubles, to tie the game at four apiece.
Responding to Bunkie’s offensive output, Sacred Heart came back in the top of the sixth, plating a run to move ahead 5-4. Caleb Soileau came across to score on a Ben Bergeron single. The Trojans were able to seal the victory by producing another run in the top of the seventh when Tate scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacob L. Lafleur.
Vidrine, who took to the mound in the bottom of the fifth, shut down the Panthers the last two and a third innings.
Tate led all Sacred Heart hitters, going two for four with a run scored. Soileau went one for two including a double, a run scored and a run batted in.
Vidrine picked up the win in a relief appearance. Vidrine faced 13 batters, giving up zero runs on two hits and struck out two.
