Trojans to play in Kiwana’s Jamboree Friday
With a solid performance in their scrimmage on Friday against Houma Christian, the Sacred Heart Trojans are ready to climb back into action. They will get their chance tomorrow night against Central Catholic of Morgan City in the Kiwana’s Jamboree. The game will be played at Teurlings High School field. Game time is set for 7:00.
Coming out of the scrimmage Head Coach Gary Adkins saw some very positive play from his squad. “I was really pleased with the effort of our players,” stated Adkins. “They played really hard all night against Houma Christian. We did not start out well, but once we got into a grove, things improved. When you are learning a new offense and a new defense, those things are to be expected.”
One bright spot for the Trojans in the scrimmage was the ability to run the football. The veteran offensive line did a tremendous job of run blocking, as Sacred Heart was able to move the ball on the ground effectively. The running back corps benefitted from the holes opened up by the front six and took advantage of every yard. “Both groups up front on offense and defense did a great job,” exclaimed Adkins. “We were excited with their play, especially toward the middle and the end of the scrimmage.”
Defensively, the Trojans gave up yardage at times to Houma Christian, but really buckled down when defending their goal line. Houma Christian only managed one score on the first team offense. The defensive line played well and plugged holes when needed against an athletic Warrior squad.
Coach Adkins talked a little about the opponent in the jamboree, Central Catholic. “They are a quality opponent. They run the spread offense and a base 3-4 defense. Their running game is solid. Defensively, they play hard and have a solid line backing corps,” commented Adkins. Coach Adkins pointed to the jamboree as just another way to evaluate his players and get them continue playing hard for a full game. “The jamboree will be no different than the scrimmage,” said Adkins. “We will use the jamboree as an evaluation tool for our players. We just want them to continue the momentum we had in the scrimmage. We are not going to change anything on offense or defense. We just want to clean up the little mistakes made against Houma Christian.”
However you look at it, the Trojans are well on their way to an exciting season. With each week Sacred Heart will definitely improve. As long as they continue to play hard and be enthusiastic, the sky is the limit on the upcoming season.
