Trojans remain perfect in district with win
The Sacred Heart Trojans moved one step closer to the district championship with a win 6-2 over the St. Ed’s Blue Jays on Monday at Aswell-Cappell field. The Trojans are now 22-3 on the season and more importantly are 4-0 in district competition. Sacred Heart used a four run second inning to propel themselves to victory. Starting pitcher Phillip Vidrine controlled the Blue Jay bats from the hill, scattering six hits over seven innings of work.
Neither squad was able to jump start the offense in the first inning, as both teams were retired in order. Vidrine made quick work of St. Ed’s in the top of the second, not allowing a batter to reach base. The Trojans got things going on offense in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs on three hits, including a double by Jacob L. Lafleur to lead off the inning. Sacred Heart also took advantage of several wild pitches to take a 4-0 lead after two innings of play.
The Trojans added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Brandon Hudspeth struck out to lead off. The next batter, Lafleur, singled in the infield to put a runner on first base with one out. On the attempted throw to get Lafleur out at first base, the ball went into the dugout. Lafleur was awarded third base because of the errant throw. Jacob Dupre, the designated hitter, drove a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Lafleur. With two outs, Sam Tuminaro singled and stole second base. Evan Mire came to plate with an opportunity to drive in another run, but was put out on a ground ball to the third baseman, retiring the side.
Sacred Heart once again plated a run in the bottom of the fourth. The lone run came on a towering home run off of the bat of Keaton Tate. The Trojans now held a 6-0 lead that would not be relinquished. Meanwhile, Vidrine continued his masterful pitching performance, shutting out the Blue Jays until the top of the sixth inning. St. Ed’s got on the board late in the game, scoring lone runs in the sixth and seventh innings, cutting the Trojan lead to 6-2. However, the Blue Jays could not sustain enough of an offensive threat to pull themselves any closer to Sacred Heart.
Vidrine picked up the complete game win, allowing only one earned run, while striking out five and giving up only one walk. Lafleur and Tuminaro led all Trojans hitters, as they both went three for three at the plate. Vidrine was two for three, while Tate went one for four. Sacred Heart is scheduled to play today against St. Ed’s in Eunice. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
