Trojans secure huge win over Opelousas Catholic

Coming into Tuesday’s game against Opelousas Catholic, the Sacred Heart Trojans were riding a 12 game winning streak. The Trojans knew that it would take a total team effort to defeat 2A powerhouse Opelousas Catholic to continue that streak. Sacred Heart broke away from the Vikings with a five run sixth inning to take the 7-1 victory. With the win, the Trojans increase their record to 17-2.
As the game began, neither squad could manage much offense. The Vikings had only one base hit in the initial 10 at bats of the contest. Sacred Heart faired a little better, garnering three hits after the third inning. However, the score reflected the non-productivity of the bats, as the game remained a scoreless tie through the first three innings of play.
After retiring Opelousas Catholic in order at the top of the fourth, the Trojans were able to plate two runs in the bottom of the inning. Garrick Fontenot led off with a double to left field. Dylan Scully entered as a pinch runner for Fontenot. Caleb Soileau singled, setting up a first and third situation. Nick LaHaye laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt scoring Scully and moving Soileau to second. Phillip Vidrine then flied out to center field for the second out.
With two outs, Ben Bergeron slapped a single to right field, allowing Soileau to score. Bergeron stole second base, putting himself in scoring position. Evan Mire came to bat next and singled to right field, but Bergeron was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second for the final out.
The fifth inning was uneventful for both clubs, as neither team could put points on the board. Vidrine took to the hill in the top of the sixth and subsequently struck out all three Viking hitters. Sensing more runs were needed for the victory, the Trojans put together an enormous offensive performance in the bottom half of the inning. Vidrine recored the first out by popping up to the short stop. The next batter, Bergeron, promptly singled and then stole second. Evan Mire reached second base on an error, which pushed Bergeron across the plate, scoring the first run of the inning.
The next two Sacred Heart batters, Keaton Tate and Brandon Hudspeth reached base via a walk and a hit by pitch. With Jacob L. Lafleur at the plate, a passed ball scored Mire. Lafleur then bombed a 1-1 pitch for a three run home run. The Trojans threatened again, placing runners on second and third with two outs, but a Vidrine fly ball to center field ended the threat and the inning. Sacred Heart now led 7-0 at the end of six innings.
The only run for Opelousas Catholic came in the top of the seventh, when the Viking runner scored on a single to right field. Vidrine quickly shut down any Viking hopes of a comeback, retiring the next batter.
On the hill, Vidrine picked up the win, pitching a complete game. Vidrine allowed only four hits, while striking out six and giving up zero walks. Lafleur led all Trojan hitters, going two for four with a three-run home run. Bergeron was two for three with an run batted in and a run scored.
