Trojans squander first quarter lead to Bears

From the opening tip, the Sacred Heart Trojans looked like a team on a mission Tuesday night against the Church Point Bears. Sacred Heart held a one point lead at the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately, they could not hold on to that lead, as the Bears owned the next three quarters in a 78-59 Trojan loss. Sacred Heart now drops to 3-10 on the season.
The first quarter began with both teams exchanging baskets and the game was tied at four apiece after two and half minutes of play. Sacred Heart then reeled off six unanswered points to go up 11-4. With 53 seconds left to play in the quarter, the Trojans held a 15-9 lead. However, the Bears responded with a six point run to trail 15-14 as the period ended.
The teams exchanged baskets at the beginning of the second quarter. Church Point then went on a 10-0 run, putting a tremendous amount of defensive pressure on the Trojans, and led 26-17 with 4:41 left in the quarter. The Bears maintained the double digit advantage for the rest of the period. As the halftime horn sounded, Church Point owned a 38-27 lead.
Church Point made a huge 14-2 run at the start of the third period and led 52-29 at the 3:13 mark. Sacred Heart’s Sean Fontenot tried to rally the Trojans with six points in the quarter and helped to cut the Bear advantage somewhat. As the third stanza came to a close, Church Points held a 60-41 lead.
Sacred Heart came out strong in the final period. Led by Conner Fontenot, the Trojans were able to cut the lead by six points to start the quarter. However, the Bears answered with another 10-2 advantage to extend their lead to 70-49 with 4:04 left in the game. Sacred Heart continued to battle for the remainder of the contest, but just could not overcome the large deficit.
Leading the way for the Trojans was Sean Fontenot, who poured in 21 points. Christopher Tate chipped in 14 points for Sacred Heart. Conner Fontenot led all rebounders with five boards. Collectively the Trojans shot 38 percent from the field and committed 17 turnovers. Sacred Heart will travel to False River next Tuesday in the first district contest for both teams.
