PATTERSON -- In the most complete game played this season, the Ville Platte Bulldogs came within inches of upsetting the fourth-ranked Patterson Lumberjacks in a bi-district playoff game here Friday night.
Trailing 21-16 with :22 seconds left in the game, and the ball on the Patterson 33-yard line, Bulldog quarterback Terez Alfred launched a pass into the end zone that was tipped away from Jaishaun Doucet at the very last second.
On fourth down, Alfred let fly another pass on the right sideline that fell out of bounds, ending the Bulldog comeback bid.
“I am so proud of our players,” said Bulldog head coach Jorie Randle. “We fought every down to get this win. I can’t say enough about the effort of our players and the leadership of our four seniors this season. They really took control of the team and put them on their shoulders this year.”
In a foreshadowing of things to come, Alfred took the opening kickoff and raced 80 yards to pay dirt for the first points of the game.
The Bulldogs added the two-point conversion to go up 8-0 early in the contest.
Patterson answered with a 30-yard pass from Sirbatian Charles to D.J. Jones midway through the first quarter. With the extra point, the score was now 8-7.
A six-yard Charles pass to Nehemiah Augustus with 8:10 left before half, gave Patterson the 14-8 lead going into the locker room.
The Lumberjacks extended that advantage in the third quarter on a 12-yard pass from Charles to Brennan Gouaux making the score 21-8.
Ville Platte cut the lead down to five with 5:02 left in the game, when Alfred plunged over right guard from two-yards out.
With the two-point conversion run, the score was now 21-14.
