It has been a perfect start for Ville Platte this season, as they bulldozed their way to a 28-0 win over Basile this past Friday to run their record to 2-0. Moreover, the way that the Bulldogs have gotten to this point is a testament to the play of the big men up front on the offensive and defensive line.
The statistics speak for themselves. In their first two games Ville Platte has 500 total yards, 434 of those yards came on the ground. On the flip side, Ville Platte has held their opponents to 86 average yards a game and has recorded two shutouts.
“We have 18 linemen that we can rotate in and keep fresh,” stated Randle. “They have been working hard day in and day out. They are getting smarter and smarter as the season goes and they are finally starting to gel as a unit on both sides of the ball.”
Accenting the front line play on offense has been the one-two punch of quarterback Jaishaun Doucet and running back Danthony Anderson. Both players bring a different skill set to the potent Ville Platte rushing attack. Randle knows that the duo have been very impactful in the perfection of the Bulldogs this season.
“I call them ‘Thunder and Lightning’,” said Randle. “Jaishaun is a physical runner, while Danthony is elusive. They really complement each other so well. It is nice to have those two guys in the backfield.”
Holding their opponents in check so far this season, the Ville Platte defensive unit has utilized their speed and quickness to put pressure on other team’s offenses. The cog in the Bulldog defensive machine up to now has been the play of their linebackers, which includes the highly recruited Tralon Thomas.
However, the key to great second level play is the ability of the defensive line to keep opposing big men from reaching those linebackers.
“We play with a nose guard and two three techniques a lot of the time,” commented Randle. “I ask those guys to sacrifice so that the linebackers can scrape and make plays. And, our linebackers have been great at getting to the running backs of the opposing team.”
Ville Platte will look to continue their run for perfection tomorrow night, as they travel to Lafayette to battle 1-1 Lafayette Christian. Last Friday the Knights lost 22-20 in a close contest against Loreauville.
“Lafayette Christian runs a true spread offense,” stated Randle. “They really want to throw the ball. Their best athlete is their quarterback. He is a returning starter and they like to the run zone read. But, one thing is they play about six players both ways. I think if we can continue to run effectively and contain their quarterback, we can pick up another win.”
