Junior Oilers wrap up season with losses

Notre Dame maintained its district lead with a 7-2 victory over the Eunice Junior Oilers in Junior American Legion Baseball at Bobcat Field this past Wednesday.

The Pioneers broke open a 2-2 game with two runs in the fifth inning, then cruised to the victory behind the relief pitching of Mitch Corzine.

Corzine, who entered to start the fourth inning, finished the game to earn the win. He allowed just one hit, walked one, and fanned three.

Tyler Fontenot turned in a steady performance for the Junior Oilers in going five innings. Fontenot scattered nine hits, walked one, and struck out six. He was touched for three earned runs.

Jacob Fontenot and Matthew Bari also saw mound duty for Eunice over the final two innings. Kade Courville was the starting pitcher for Notre Dame, working the first three innings.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. Corzine tripled with two out, and scored on a balk.

Notre Dame added a run in the top of the third inning. Luke Bourgeois singled, stole second, and scored on a double by Ricky Stoma.

Eunice tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. Jacob Fontenot singled and came home on Tyler Fontenot’s triple. Courtesy runner Brandon Baquet scored the tying run on a single by Alex Comeaux.

The Pioneers took the lead for good in that two fifth inning. With two out, Stoma singled, stole second base, and scored on a single by Corzine.

After Austin Robichaux reached on an error, Corzine would score on a single by Zack Abshire.

Notre Dame added a single run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to increase their lead to 7-2.

Eunice could mount only one threat against Corzine, and that came in the sixth after Comeaux reached on an error. Comeaux would reach second base on a two-out single by Connor Cortina, but Corzine would strike out the next batter to end the threat.

The Junior Oilers finished with just four hits, including the triple by Tyler Fontenot. The other hits were singles by Jacob Fontenot, Comeaux, and Cortina.

Abshire was the top hitter for Notre Dame with three hits. Bourgeois, Stoma, and Corzine had two hits apiece.

On Thursday, the Junior Oilers (6-8) ended their season with a 12-4 loss to Rayne at Bobcat Field.

Rayne used a five-run second inning to take an early lead, but Eunice continued to battle through the seventh inning.

Brody Olivier, Matthew Bari, and Landon Marcantel shared pitching duties for the Oilers. Dakota Broussard pitched six strong innings for Rayne for the mound victory.

Aaron Chaisson led Rayne with three hits. Broussard and Myles Pryor added two hits apiece, while Tyler Venable slammed a solo home run.

Lane David led the Eunice offense with two hits and one RBI. Alex Comeaux had a run-scoring single, and Marcantel had a single.
