Lady Jays seal third place with win over False River

NEW ROADS – The St. Edmund Lady Jays wrapped up district play this week, scoring a 3-1 victory over False River Academy Tuesday.
The Lady Jays (16-11-1; 2-4) finished third in District 6-1A; St. Joesph’s of Plaucheville (17-9; 5-1) claimed the championship, and Catholic High of Pointe Coupee (20-8; 4-2) fell in at second.
With the win, the Lady Jays have qualified for the Class 1A state playoffs, beginning next week. They’ll learn their first-round foe Friday.
St. Eds scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead, beginning when Mollie Brown doubled to score Anne-Marie Himel, who had drawn a walk.
Simone Guillory and Taylor Richard each drove in one run as well.
False River got on the board in the second half, when Susan Lejuene was hit by a pitch and later scored.
Leah Andrus pitched the win for St. Eds, giving up one earned run on three hits and three walks. Andrus struck out seven batters in the seven-inning game.
In preparation for the playoffs, the Lady Jays will play a non-district doubleheader against Menard today in Alexandria at 5 p.m.
