The Lady Trojans battled the Lady Greyhounds of Welsh in their first round playoff game Tuesday. It was a total team effort as Sacred Heart cruised to a 9-1 victory. The girls in blue and gold took advantage of every mistake Welsh made, and made some opportunities of their own.

Logan Hebert did a miraculous job in the circle. She went all seven innings for her team. She fanned eight batters and surrendered only one hit.

Sacred Heart found the plate in the second inning. With two outs, Lyndsey Schexnayder reached base on an error and Shelby Fontenot was hit by a pitch. Senior third baseman Anne Marie Fontenot drilled a triple, scoring both runners. Shortstop Samantha Davenport came to the plate next. She slammed the first pitch she saw for a two-run home run.

The Lady Trojans continued to play solid defense and shut down the Welsh girls. Back on offense, they added another run in the bottom of the fourth frame. Schexnayder walked and scored on a fielder’s choice from Fontenot.

With a 5-0 lead, the Lady Trojans were naturally going to want some insurance runs before Welsh batted in the top of the seventh inning. They got all they wanted in a set of four runs.

The bottom of the sixth began with Hebert reaching base on an error. Schexnayder followed with a single, and Shelby Fontenot reached base on a fielder’s choice. Anne Marie Fontenot hit a ball that was misplayed by the shortstop, allowing Hebert to cross the plate. Davenport laid down a sacrifice to score Schexnayder. Shelby Fontenot and Anne Marie Fontenot later scored on a passed ball.

The 9-0 lead was cut short when the Lady Greyhounds picked up a run in the top of the seventh.

It will be a time for revenge in the next round. The SHHS girls meet the girls of Rosepine High School. The Lady Trojans will host RHS Saturday. The time for that game was not determined by press time, according to sources at Sacred Heart High School.

Sacred Heart will play again Saturday at 4 p.m.
