4-H Cotton Commodity Cookery Contest winners announced
The 2014 4-H Cotton Food Festival got off to a great start at the 20th Annual Cotton Festival 4-H Cotton Commodity Cookery Contest held Wednesday, October 8, at the Ville Platte Civic Center. Eighty-six dishes were entered in the Ground Beef, Seafood and Sugar Contests and 5 entries in the Ambassador Contests, which are sponsored by Evangeline Parish Cattleman’s Association, the Louisiana Cotton Festival Association, Mikey’s Donuts and the Evangeline Parish 4-H Foundation.
Parish Winners in the Beef Cookery were:
Low Calorie: Karina Parks, Sacred Heart Elementary seventh grade, with Hamburger Soup.
One Dish Meal: Emily Deshotel, Vidrine Elementary fifth grade, with Stuffed Pepper Soup.
Quick and Easy Main Dish: Benjamin Fontenot, Sacred Heart Elementary fifth grade, with Upside Down Pizza.
Parish winners in the Seafood Cookery were:
Oyster: Annabeth Briley, Sacred Heart Elementary eighth grade, with Oyster Dressing.
Crab: Anna Drago, Sacred Heart Elementary fifth grade, with Elegant Crab Salad.
Shrimp: Collen Fontenot, Sacred Heart Elementary fifth grade, with Eggplant Shrimp and Crabmeat Casserole.
Fish and Other Seafood: Benjamin Fontenot, Sacred Heart Elementary fifth grade, with Miller’s Lake Baked Bass.
Crawfish: Sydni Ortego, Sacred Heart Elementary eighth grade, with Crawfish Dip.
Parish Winners in the Sugar Cookery were:
Baked: Kayra Fontenot, Vidrine Elementary seventh grade, with Peanut Butter and Jelly Cupcakes.
Non-baked: Karis Johnson, Good Shepherd Home School Club fourth grade, with Fudge with Peanut Butter.
The Commodity Ambassador Contest winners were:

The Ground Beef, Seafood and Sugar parish winners will represent Evangeline Parish in the Regional 4-H Cookery Contests, which will be held in Crowley in April of 2015. Commodity Ambassador winners will represent Evangeline Parish in the State Contest, which will be in held in Baton Rouge in April of 2015.
