Buller shares memories of Miller’s Lake with VP Rotary Club
July 29, Meeting
Rotarian Jake Ardoin welcomed local author and outdoors enthusiast Gene Buller to address the July 29, meeting of the Ville Platte Rotary Club. Buller shared his fond memories, history and love of Miller’s Lake. He stated that in the mid 1920s, Gus Miller had about seven miles of land in the “platin,” which did not drain well and was not good farm land. Miller decided to fix up the property and the wetlands in the northern part of Evangeline Parish drained into this area, forming a lake. People began to duck hunt in the head waters of the Nezpique, and the first five men to give $5 to help extend the levees formed the first hunting club there in 1929. Buller joined the club several years later and has hunted with many members over the years. He has now been a member for 63 of the club’s 85 years. He bought his own camp there and brought his daughters out there to learn how to go frogging, fishing and drive a boat. He wrote a book, “Bucks, Ducks, and Doves - Cajun Style” several years ago detailing his special memories of hunting and fishing, especially at Miller’s Lake. In closing his talk, Buller read an excerpt from his book to the members.
