Catholic Daughters monthly meeting held on May 4
Gazette Staff Report
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Sacred Heart of Jesus Court #1674, held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 4, in the Sacred Heart Elementary School science lab, with Regent Barbara Delafosse officiating. A slate of officers for the coming year was elected as follows: Barbara Delafosse, regent; Belinda Fontenot, vice regent; Ramona Ortego, recording secretary; Sybil Veillon, financial secretary; and Miranda Roberie, treasurer. Father Thomas Voorhies and Father Matthew Barzarre will serve as court chaplains.
The Sacred Heart court is a member of the Louisiana and United States Catholic Daughters of the Americas Associations. All are dedicated to charity work. The local court supports both national and state charities. On the state level, this court supports seminaries in the Diocese of Lafayette, State Projects for Rainbow, Second Harvest Food Bank and The Desormeaux Foundation, which is a house for unwed mothers. The state also chooses a CDA kid and this year marked the second time that a child from Evangeline Parish was selected as CDA Kid of the Year.
Locally in Ville Platte, the court supports Heritage Manor Nursing Home by sponsoring bingo games, giving parties for residents, leading Come Lord Jesus classes and scheduling masses and rosaries. The court also supports the Evangeline ARC, Faith House and annually sponsors a French Retreat for the residents of the nursing homes in Ville Platte, Mamou and Pine Prairie, as well as the public who wishes to attend a mass said in French. Last Christmas, the court #1674 gave toys and gift certificates to 325 children and gave 12 families enough food to feed them for a month.
The court will host its annual salad bingo fund raiser on Tuesday, June 7, at the Northside Civic Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the meal will be served beginning at 6 p.m. The bingo games will begin at 7 p.m. after the meal. The cost is $15, which includes the salad, drink and dessert. Ten regular bingo games and one black out game will be held. Great door prizes also will be awarded. All tickets must be purchased by the deadline of June 1, the date of the next Catholic Daughters meeting. For more information, contact Regent Barbara Delafosse (337-224-7795).
The court is also sponsoring a scholarship of $100 for two graduating senior girls. This year’s recipients were Baylee Veillon and Sophie Gil of Sacred Heart High School.
