Evangeline Parish 4-H Sew With Cotton Style Show winners announced
Gazette Staff Report
On February 23 and 25, the LSU AgCenter held the 4-H Sewing with Cotton and Spring Clothing Contest. The 4-H Sew-with-Cotton Contest requires the construction of a garment using a 100 percent cotton fabric. The Spring Clothing Contest entries can be made from any fiber content fabric that is suited to the selected pattern.
The first Sew-With-Cotton Clothing Contest was held in 1970. It was open to high school members only. In 1982, the contest was opened to junior 4-H members as well. The Spring Clothing Contest began as an Achievement Day contest back in 1936 - that’s 75 years ago! We are excited about the interest and participation in these clothing contests and believe that the 4-H members from all over Evangeline Parish are also excited and proud to show off their latest creations.
The actual contest judging was held Tuesday afternoon, February 23, in the Extension Office with the 4-H’ers modeling their garments before a panel of judges. Their appearance scores were added to their construction scores and the winners were determined. The winners were announced after the Style Show held at Wal-Mart on Thursday evening, February 25.
The judges for the appearance and modeling part of this contest were: Mrs. Shirley Williams and Mrs. Elaine Savant. Shirley Williams is a seamstress and has her own business re-upholstering furniture, and Elaine Savant is a retired wedding planner and has been sewing since high school.
Kimberly Deville, 4-H Youth Agent, would like to recognize the junior leaders who were there to assist with the 4-H activity: Morgan Fontenot, Camille Bergeron, Madison Darbonne, Gabrielle Fontenot, Sydni Ortego, Hailey Vidrine, Hallie Daire, Iyanna Freeman, Lelia Deville, Baylee Guillory and Ainsley Veillon. “Thank you junior leaders, for your help. I would also like to recognize our sponsors Wal-Mart and the Cajunettes - a group of very active ladies who truly believe in the youth of our parish.”
