Garden of the Month, Civic Pride Award winners announced

The Garden of the Month and Civic Pride Award of Merit for July was selected by a committee from the Magnolia Garden Club. The recipient of the Garden of the Month honor was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Dupre, and the Civic Pride Award was presented to the Sacred Heart High School Prayer Garden. The Dupre residence, first two photos, features two red knockout roses that invite visitors to approach the front door. Yellow, orange and white portulaca are spread along the ground by the roses. Two pots of begonias and salvia sit at the edge of the porch. Elm, oak and pecan trees are located at vantage points of the yard. On both sides of the house, bird baths are located, along with a bench and wheelbarrow filled with several colors of periwinkles. A large sugar kettle filled with goldfish is featured near the workshop. Many kinds of potted plants and two large palm trees form the background. The Sacred Heart prayer garden, last two photos, is located in a niche between wings of the building. The centerpiece of the prayer garden is the pieta, a sculpture of Mary, the mother grieving over the body of Jesus after the Crucifixion. The stations of the cross are surrounded by luxuriant foliage featuring striped grasses, box woods, ligustrums, liriope and agapanthus within a framework of six magnolias.
