Insect Day held at Louisiana State Arboretum

Staff Report

VILLE PLATTE — More than 200 people attended this year’s Insect Day at the Louisiana State Arboretum on July 16.
Kim Hollier, Interpretive Ranger 3 at the arboretum, said visitors viewed and touched many native and exotic insects and other arthropods brought by Steven Barney of The Beetle Experience.
Faculty from the Louisiana State University Arthropod Museum in Baton Rouge were also at the event with preserved specimens and insect collecting equipment to answer questions.
Hollier said children had fun making insect crafts and drawing their favorite insect.
The arboretum staff also had a table set up for visitiors to learn about pollinators as well.
Other exhibitors included Forensic Entomologist Erin Watson-Horzelski with SLU, primitive tool expert Andrew Barron, Stacy Blomquist with the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station and Linda Auld, The Bug Lady of New Orleans, with Barber Laboratories.
Later that evening, there was a guided hike to search for insects and other creatures.
