Becky Buller and Susan LaHaye, board members of the Keep Evangeline Beautiful campaign, announced plans for the upcoming trash bash. Buller said the board is made up of 13 members who are involved in spreading the word about the litter problem, which is out of control. She emphasized the importance of teaching children in school the importance of keeping your community clean beginning at a young age.
To that effect, trash cans with decals are placed at all the parish schools, and younger students are given coloring sheets. She admitted it is hard to cover the entire parish, but they are doing their best. LaHaye added more people need to be reached and encouraged business people to add a line to any radio or print advertisements about keeping Evangeline beautiful and clean. She added that they can serve as leaders and mentors to work with the youth of the community to educate, motivate and get them actively involved in keeping their community clean.
To help spread awareness, the Keep Evangeline Beautiful board will hold a project clean up trash bash on Monday, November 23, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sonic Drive In is partnering with the group to host the event. Students from across the parish are invited to attend and participate. Those participating must register with a committee member and must pick up a good size bag of trash (paper and plastics). Sonic will donate treats to participating students. The Keep Evangeline Beautiful committee says, “Bring a friend. Have a good time. Team up and clean up!”
