This week, we take a look back at November 1965.
•Sister Mary Alcuin (the former Margaret Lafleur), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Lafleur of Ville Platte, was named president of the Louisiana Registered Nurses Association for a two-year term. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School and employed as the administrator of Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas. She was the first from the St. Landry and Evangeline Parish Registered Nursing District to be elected to serve.
•Mrs. Clifton Fontenot was named Catholic Daughter of the Year.
•Hosea Soileau of Ville Platte was named director of the State Parks and Recreation Commission.
•The M.J. Fontenot store held a going out of business sale, featuring mens blue jeans for $2.98 and womens dress shoes for $4.98.
•French’s Supermarket’s sale items included one gallon LouAna oil for $1.89; two pound bag Seaport Coffee for $1.38, 10 pound bag of sugar for 98 cents, 25 pound bag of Tendo Rice for $2.39 and Frey’s dressed grade A fryers for 27 cents per pound.
•G. Ardoin’s featured a sale on televisions, including the RCA Sport About television for $139.95.
•Lemoine Brothers featured a sale on Easy washers and dryers at $138.88.
•Movies playing at the Jan Theatre “The Cincinnati Kid,” starring Steve McQueen, Edward G. Robinson and Ann Margaret; and “The Sandpiper,” starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
•Popular songs of November 1965 included: “I Hear a Symphony” by The Supremes, “Rescue Me” by Fontella Bass, “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)” by The Byrds, “Yesterday” by the Beatles and “Make the World Go Away” by Eddy Arnold.
