This week, we take a look back at October 1987
•Edwin Edwards conceded his bid for a third term when he bowed out of the governor’s race, allowing Buddy Roemer to become the next governor of Louisiana.
•Ashlyn Kaye Adams, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Fontenot, attended the National Junior Association Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, to represent Louisiana 4-H with her demonstration “Louisiana Yams: From Field to Festival.”
•Mitch Soileau won his seventh Tournoi title.
•The Evangeline Parish Police Jury conducted a study on the feasibility of a 374-bed parish jail.
•Calvary Baptist Church celebrated its 175th anniversary under the leadership of Pastor Leon Terrel.
•Louanna Anderson was named Woman of the Year for the Deaconary Board of Ninth Baptist Church in Ville Platte.
•Prairie Manor Nursing Home in Pine Prairie celebrated its one-year anniversary by burying a time capsule of memories from its first year to be opened once the mortgage was paid off in 28 years.
•Betsy Johnson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Johnson, was named Ville Platte High School’s homecoming queen.
Yvonne Dardeau was named director of the Koala Treatment Center at Opelousas General Hospital.
•Arthur Savoy of Ville Platte was honored for his efforts as MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) regional coordinator when his region came in third in the state in fund raising efforts.
•The Ville Platte Housing Authority received a $1.3 million grant for the modernization of 70 units and the building of 25 new units. Plans and location of the new units had not yet been determined.
•Rotary District Governor David Broussard announced that Amanda LaFleur, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight LaFleur of Ville Platte and French teacher at Comeaux High School in Lafayette, was selected as one of four young women to participate in a Rotary Group Study Exchange in New Delhi, India.
•Sale items at Winn-Dixie included two-pound tub container of Country Crock for $1.69, six-ounce bottle of Neutrogena shampoo for $4.42, 13-ounce pack of Community Coffee for $1.39, baking hens for 69 cents per pound, four-pound bag of red delicious apples for 99 cents and Alka Seltzer cold medicine for $2.79.
•Earl’s Tires featured a special on oil change and lube and filter change for $8.88.
•Sale items at Allied included wash clothes at three for $1, bath towels at two for $5 and womens dress shoes at 2 pairs for $20.
•Movies released in October 1987 included “Baby Boom,” starring Diane Keaton and Harold Ramis and “Like Father, Like Son,” starring Kirk Cameron and Dudley Moore.
•Popular songs of October 1987 included “Bad” by Michael Jackson, “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany, “Should’ve Known Better” by Richard Marx, “Lost in Emotion” by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes and “Where the Streets Have No Name” by U2.
