Magnolia Garden Club holds monthly meeting

The Magnolia Garden Club met at the home of Theresa Attales on Tuesday, March 10, with President Mable Foreman presiding. Elaine LaTour and Attales were the hostesses, and a majority of the members were in attendance. Treasurer Glenda Mitchell was present to collect the annual club dues. Absent members are urged to contact her about paying their dues, as they must be turned in to the state and national garden clubs soon.
Foreman has not been able to contact those in charge about planting a tree for Arbor Day at the new ball park. The club hopes to plant the trees sometime in April. A workshop beginning at 1 p.m. will be held on April 8, at the home of Hazel Fontenot to complete the club’s scrapbooks.
Foreman attended the Ville Platte City Council meeting, and Mayor Jennifer Vidrine reminded the public not to place illegal signs on electrical poles. Not only is this against Louisiana law, but it is dangerous to Cleco linemen or anyone who is near the poles. If you have put up signs, please remove them.
A slate of officers for the coming club year was presented as follows: Mable Foreman, president; Elaine LaTour, vice president; Lynn Landreneau, secretary; Glenda Mitchell, treasurer; and Joyce Coreil, historian.
Due to the very bad weather throughout February and March, the club decided to wait until mid-April to choose the Garden of the Month and Civic Pride awards. The judging will be held around April 15, in the hopes that the yards will show some spring life by then.
The April meeting will be held April 6, and the spring club social will be hosted by Haidee Floyed on May 4.
Elaine LaTour gave a program titled Ready! Set! Garden! The program was about working in the yard or garden with Osteo-arthritis. She said to be sure to take any medications before getting started. Other tips included warming up the muscles with a five-minute walk, doing gentle muscle stretches for the chest, back and shoulders, taking brief rests, kneeling on a pad, watching your posture and not staying in a hunched up position for long periods of time.
A social hour with delicious refreshments followed the meeting.
