Magnolia Garden Club installs new club officers
The Magnolia Garden Club celebrated its spring social at the home of Thurman and Haidee Floyed on Monday, May 4. New club officers were installed during the event.
Past president Hazel Fontenot installed the officers for the coming club year as follows: Mable Foreman, president; Elaine LaTour, vice president; Lynn Landreneau, secretary; Glenda Mitchell, treasurer; and Paula Landreneau, historian/parliamentarian.
The club presented a scrapbook to former president Lola Fontenot, which featured the club’s events during her term in office.
May 4, was the second anniversary of the death of Rose P. Fontenot, an accredited flower show judge and very active club member for many years. Members said a prayer in her memory and reminisced about Rose’s involvement with club activities over the years. She was the child of Italian immigrants who lived in New Orleans. She moved to Ville Platte after marrying Rodney Fontenot and became the first female pharmacist in Evangeline Parish.
Haidee Floyed shared a photo of the 1947 members of the Magnolia Garden Club found in her mother’s desk. Shown in the picture were Bonnie Stagg Guillory, Edna Milton Guillory, Elsie Jeanmard, Carmen Lafleur Fruge, Corinne Fox Jeanmard, Virginia Gremillion West, Lura Jane Dupre Aswell, Betty Wiggins, Valerie Lafleur Soileau, Genevieve Jeanmard Welch and Geraldine Coreil Soileau.
On June 4, the Magnolia Garden Club will have a brown bag lunch at 11 a.m. in the Native Plant Heritage Garden. Guests are welcome.
The following members enjoyed the social hour and a delicious meal after the meeting: Theresa Attales, Jeannie Ardoin, Joyce Coreil, JoAnne Eastin, Haidee Floyed, Lola Fontenot, Hazel Fontenot, Mable Foreman, Lynn Landreneau, Paula Landreneau and Elaine LaTour. Two guests were former president Patrice Hemmi and Charleen Dupre.
Members of the Magnolia Garden Club will be choosing the Garden of the Month and Civic Pride Award on or around the 15th of each month.
