Magnolia Garden Club plans landscaping on Ville Platte east entrance
On Monday, October 13, the Magnolia Garden Club met at the home of JoAnne Eastin, with Hazel Fontenot presiding in the absence of President Mable Foreman. Members present were JoAnne Eastin, Joyce Coreil, Lynn Landreneau, Hazel Fontenot, Glenda Mitchell, Elaine LaTour, Theresa Attales, Geannie Ardoin, Dalayne Veillon and guest Christy Hayes.
After the opening ceremonies, the club discussed the dangers of placing signs for garage sales, car sales, houses for rent, etc. on the utility poles located along the town’s streets. These signs are stapled or nailed into the poles. When the signs are removed, the nails or staples are left in the pole. These metal objects are dangerous to the electrical workers who climb the poles and can also start fires. It is against Louisiana law to nail signs to utility poles. The Magnolia Garden Club is asking the community to refrain from placing signs on the poles.
A budget for club year was presented by treasurer Glenda Mitchell and approved by the club.
Hazel Fontenot, Geannie Ardoin, Paula Landreneau and Elaine LaTour attended the Area VII Garden Club meeting in Rayne on October 15.
The club made plans for its Christmas party, which will be held December 8.
Landscaper Randal Glaser had approached the club about making plans to improve the flower bed around the welcome sign on the east end of Ville Platte. Elaine LaTour and Christy Hayes will chair this project committee.
Hazel Fontenot and Haidee Floyed will place a book at the Evangeline Parish Library in memory of Rose Fontenot.
Glenda Mitchell gave a program on fall decorations using pumpkins and mums. After the top of the pumpkin is cut off and the insides are removed, spray the pumpkin with a solution of bleach and water to keep the pumpkin from becoming molded. A potted mum was placed inside a plastic bag and secured inside the pumpkin. Several of these pumpkins make a nice display for outside or a table centerpiece.
A social hour followed the meeting.
