Magnolia Garden Club presents awards
The Garden of the Month and Civic Pride Award of Merit for September was selected by a committee from the Magnolia Garden Club. The recipient of the Garden of the Month honor was the home of Dr. Peter and Jackie Fontenot, first two photos, and the Civic Pride Award was presented to Our Lady Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, next two photos. At the Fontenot residence, large pine trees form a background behind the house. The bed surrounding the house has magnolia trees forming a frame on each end of the house. Two green hedges mark a path to the front door. Two rocking chairs invite one to linger and enjoy the garden. Color in the bed during the seasons of the year is provided by flowers blooming at different intervals, including agapanthus, coleus, sasanqua and yellow coneflowers. A large oak tree at the side shades a portion of the yard. It is anchored with coleus, agapanthus and aspidistra. At the church, large live oak trees are featured on the manicured grounds. A row of crepe myrtles lines the walkway to the church’s double doors. An angel statue is noticed near the bed at the end of the drive. The bed has pink and white periwinkles surrounding an evergreen shrub. Sasanquas along the walk will soon be in bloom. The same kind of flower beds are found surrounding the base of the church. Over to one side of the church, a circle of red blooming rose bushes edge the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, honoring life.
